I have my motor for new Wraith Spawn kit but am not sure what pinion to run. My motor is a Holmes CrawlMaster Expert 540 13T and I'll be running 2S. What size pinion do I need to pick up?

Well, my Crawlmaster went up in smoke 40 minutes into its first trail run. I was running stock gearing 56/12 (which should be ok from what I've read in this thread). The truck was driven at walking speed. What would cause this? Did I get a faulty motor? |

56-12 is to tall HH Recommends 56-10 gearing

Working on a Wraith build. I already have a HH Trailmaster BLE Pro I'd like to run. Curious which HH Brushless motor to run if I'm looking to do mostly trail running leaning towards crawling performance. Also a gearing suggestion would be appreciated. If I'm off the mark with the combo I'm shooting for I'm glad to jam that ESC and a motor into my 1.9 scaler and grab a completely different combo in the Wraith. Money isn't a limiting factor. I don't skimp on electronics.

Take a look again at posts 1-4. HH (and many others, myself included) recommends 10T or smaller pinion with a 54T spur in a Wraith. If you are going with a Torquemaster, 27T or 35T. If you're going with a Crawlmaster, 13T or 16T (which are equivalent to 27T and 35T 3-slot motors). And if you want both speed and crawling in a Wraith, sensored brushless is the way to go. Enough wheel speed and great crowlability Maybe John (HH) would suggest the 3300kv instead, according to the rule "kv up / gear down" My 2cs Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

I'm sure it may have been mentioned in here before, but there's 200 pages to this thread, so please forgive me. I recently built a wraith using the running gear out of my AX10 Deadbolt. I started with a 55t motor on 3s, with 87/20 gearing. I was happy with it in the AX10, but wanted something with some more wheelspeed in the wraith. I tried a 27t I had, and it started to overheat quickly. I know I should've changed the gearing, but I didn't. Now im about to drop in a new 45t motor and wonder what gearing to run. I will be running on 3s, and the truck weighs around 8lbs. I would like to keep the 87tooth spur, since it's all I have. What size pinion will work well with this setup? Your original speed was around 5 mph. With the 27t it was on the order of 11 mph. If you want to get right in the middle with a 45t you'll need a 26t pinion. Keep in mind the kv ratings are no-load and estimated for brushed motors. This will give you a good start though. Personally, I'd get 3 pinions - 22, 24, and 26, and give them all a try. They're cheap and good to have some options in hand.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll try out those combos, just don't want to smoke a new motor. Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk |

So my question and it might be silly but I've been told you can and that you can't run a brushed motor on a 3s set up? Can you run a brushed motor on 3s geared for crawling and trailing?

All of my brushed motors are running 3s...so your information is wrong.

The Titan 12t 550 doesn't like 3s. Most ESCs have limitations for what turn motors it will handle on 3s also. Check the manuals for these. Some motors are recommended at 3s either and this needs to also be checked. But maybe 95% +/- of the 540 cans are 3s capable. It's the factory branded cans that may not handle the power. I.E.: HPI, ECX, Losi, etc. Not the actual vendors that supply them. I'm currently running a cheap sensor less 2100kV using the AE-3 ESC on 13/64 gearing and it has exceeded my expectations. On 2s it will very lightly cog when under load at the slowest I can manage out of my Tx. On flat ground it will not cog. On 3s it'll run fairly good. I ordered a 3100kV before getting this one put together but I fear it'll be too much unless I drop down to around a 9t pinion. Last edited by Brake Weight; 10-19-2016 at 06:40 AM. |

Hi guys, My name is George and i'm from Romania. I started building a Wraith. Now i want to invest some money in a new combo. Everyone is talking about Pro4 3300kv. As i know, you run 3s. I can take a Pro4 4600kv instead, for a bargain price of 50$ and i want to run it on 2s. I do my maths 3300x12.6v(3s lipo)=41580 4600x8.4v(2s lipo)=38640 So,yes the 3300kv motor on 3s has more power than 4600 on 2s. But, it will work? |

Yes the 3300/ 3s setup will have a little more top end power. But you should also consider the better low end torque and smoother start up of the lower kv motor. Smart man say, "Volt up, gear down." |

Like I posted earlier. I'm running a 2100kV and couldn't be happier with it. If I want any more speed I'll put a 3s battery in it.

I perfectly understand what you are saying. BUT, i didnt find any budget brushless 4pole sensored motor. Only sensorless. And to be honest, sensored is better.

Hi, I have a Wraith to complete with electronic, and also a combo hobbywing with xerun V2.1 esc and sensored xerun 11.5T 3000 Kv motor. Could I use it with my Wraith, with 3S batteries ? If yes, I only have 80T/20T ratio, would it be usable with it ? |
