Default Re: Choosing a motor and ESC redline or maba pro max

so for my wraith I have 2 system that I need people to help me decide
1 is a castle 4600KV 4 pole motor and a castle 1/10 maba max pro esc
2 is a tekin redline RS system with a redline motor 17.5 turn - sensored brushless system

my main driving style would be 70-60% bashing on trail and 30-40% crawling

any suggestion which one I should use?
I upgraded the gears to a robinson all one piece diff geaer
TowerHobbies.com | Robinson Racing Diff Gear One-Piece Steel Bottom Wraith

and also the idler gears to robinson
TowerHobbies.com | Robinson Racing Idler Gear Hardened Steel Wraith

spur I got 84t 48p and also a robinson 80t 48p

The Castle motor is not sensored, therefore nearly useless for this type of truck.

Im thinking 2s lipo will be ok to keep speed down,I need wheel speed sometimes but im not racing or bashing ..just crawling mostly ttc style
Whata think?
Like Harley said that's a pretty fast motor to crawl with. Definitely at the upper end of what will work. I run a 3400kv 4 pole 60/11 gearing on 3s. I think to be happy with the way it crawls you will need to gear even lower than me. What size pinion shaft does it have?

5mm shaft...
I have 32p 11-14 pinions and a 58t spur to fit it ..and ill be on 2s so that should keep it from being to crazy.
Will see maybe ill just stick with the brushed stuff till I bullet proof my trans. im just looking to see if what I have will work out later..or ill just get new motor and run with rx8 later on 3s

I would try it with the 58/11 setup but I think you will still want it deeper. If you already have the stuff you might as well try it, because brushed motors are kind of boring in a wraith.

Two questions. I am building my wraith to run the pro4 3300/rx8 setup. I got the RR gear, one piece gear, beefy top shaft, 32P slash gen 3 slipper setup etc. I am waiting to sell a few things for some more funds to buy the pro4 motor but in the meanwhile I have a D3 13.5T motor I want to toss in to get some run time in.
My questions are one, I know it is overkill but with the D3 13.5t have any issues running on the RX8 (or vice versa will my rx8 have issues?)

Second question is with the 32P Slash 56T gen 3 what would be a good pinion to run with the 13.5t?

That's a 3600kv motor so gear it as low as you can.

Thanks
One more thing I forgot to mention
I'm building a 4ws (4 wheel steering) wraith from the kit
so what gearing and motor do you suggest?
My concern is the 4ws setup limiting my choice of motor and gears
will be starting a new thread of my build soon, with photos - started but haven't had the time to post

What would be a good starting point? 12t, 13t?

Look at the rest of this page. The discussion between bronc and I applies to you too.

I am going to run my rx8 and a D3 13.5T for now while I wait for a pro4 motor. Anyone running an rx8 care to share their esc settings?

What about a 550 motor? Traxxas used them in the E-max they do have more torque. Will they fit?

I have a couple of the old ROAR STOCk motors. 27 turn single and 24 degrees max should be a decent introductory crawler motor.

27T @24* Stock motor may work on 2s. On 3s you'll need quick reflexes to get the body off and disconnect the battery before the flames start. Don't ask me how I know.

Gearing is key. If you regear right out of the box you can run it for quite awhile. I'm 5 weeks in on mine running only 3s.

It is a solid motor, it is longer than the original Pro4 so it takes some trimming of the rear upper link mount to fit it.

Harley what kind of speed would I get from the h.h 27t with the 56/12 gearing compared to the stock 20t with the 80/20

Less.

I mean I can't really give you a great number or anything. But the problem is the stock motor and gearing is just death to a brushed motor. 27t motors are a good mix of speed and torque for a Wraith.
