I just installed a 14t on mine with a 87t spur. Stock 20t motor. The difference in power and torque is amazing.

I set mine up with 32 pitch gears, running 14/60 to start out with.

I plan on picking up a 87/14 this weekend if my 27T axial motor arrives.

I use 15T pinion, but I only do crawling. Here is my full technical modifications: Wraith - Battery moved to front, 88T spur, 15T pinion, 55T motor, front wheel weight 410g each, rear underdrive and dig system installed. You can see how it performs from the youtube link below:

The Pitch on a 32 pitch gear is the size of the teeth. The 32 pitch gear has bigger teeth than a 48 pitch gear. The bigger teeth are stronger, but the larger teeth and the way they mesh make them louder and not as smooth as a set of 48 pitch gears. Running a stock Wraith trans geared correctly (for crawling 14/87) you will be fine with the 48 pitch, I also like to run a slipper clutch to help save my gears in a bind.

Wraith is a mixed group......some like it fast, some crawl. If you like to go fast a brushless setup is the way to go, geared correctly and monitor your motor temps.
Crawler guys/girls need to almost run and gear it like an AX10....small pinion big spur and over drive the front axle.

I first started cutting gears on a gear hobber in 1977 and have hobbed.shaped and shaved gears for over 20 years.I do agree that the larger tooth of the gear will make more noise but most of the noise comes from the quality of the gears you buy. I'm sure almost all of the plastic gears are molded with very poor quality. A lot of the noise comes from the bad profile of the tooth and runout in the gear. Ive found if you set a little backlash on one side of the gear and you rotate it 180 degrees it will bind up or have way to much backlash. I'm also very surprised at the cost of the gears that are out there for this hobby. Makes me want to buy a used gear hobber and start cutting teeth again. It would be fun to cut gears other than 64,48and 32 pitch. I think of the different ratios I could come up with 42 and 36 pitch gears. Helical gears would be fun also as you would have more tooth contact with the same width of gear. If you have any more questions on gears just let me know

Wouldn't helical be quieter too?

Yes it would but you would have to worry about the side thrust of the helical gears. They would push in opposite directions so you would need a thrust washer or bearing to keep the friction down from the side thrust.Or run them on bearings at each end of the shaft. A lot of helical gear setups we did used a cupped shaft that ride on a ball on each end to offset the thrust of the gears.
