Default ROJO's 4WS Wraith

The Cliff Notes as of 7/26/12:




The Start:

Been fooling with this thing a little, figured might as well do a build thread on it. It was bought to trail run with, so I am looking for a reliable mix of speed and crawl-ability...

Out of the box like all the others:



The first day before even running it:

Swapped Tires (foams: CI 5.5=fr/rc4wd stock=rr), Wheels, Lower Links, Servo (5955TG), 7T Puller, RR idler in transmission, 87t spur, MIP drive shafts, 3r Radio Gear, 3s lipo, CCBEC @ 6v, and rewired everything with Bullets and Deans. Battery location left in the rear (for now).








Next day the Pro-line shocks (slash ones) went on. I used the longer (slash-rear) shocks on the front. The shocks are mounted all the way back on the tower. I also used a shorter rod end on the shaft to lower it a hair more. I used the shorter (slash-front) shocks on the rear. They are mounted in the middle hole on the tower and also have a little shorter rod ends on them as well.

Overall I am fairly happy with it so far. The puller gets pretty hot, so I may have to find another solution motor wise. Definitely going to need to move the batteries to the front (somewhere) as well. It has almost a 50-50 weight distribution right now. The shocks seemed to be working pretty smoothly. I am running 25wt in them with the springs they come with. The springs are a little stiff for crawling, so I ordered a few softer rate springs to play with. Still tons to do to it, but it is running for now...

Thanks! I really like the links too. They fit the look of the Wraith great, are a huge upgrade in strength, and help to set it apart from the others

Thanks! Ran it on a hike today for a few miles and I am really starting to like it a lot. There is a lot of potential for good looks and performance in these Wraiths.

Colby, Got any pics of the 7T Puller installed? I was looking at mine and did not think it would fit (lower link mount in the way).

You have to notch the upper control arm mount for it to fit... I will get a few pictures tomorrow for you

I have had 3 pullers....with all the hype I have to agree with you. TOO MUCH HEAT on these motors. Long time ago this might have been the best avail but today the motors that HH has coming (torquemaster series and crawlmasters) are walking all over the performance of the old style puller. IMO

They do make a bunch of heat on a 3s. But I have also never had one fail due to heat either. What I love about the 7t puller motors are the torque they put out along with the decent amount wheel speed... The trick to a puller is to gear it down on a 3s battery. You can't use the same gearing as you do on a 2s setup. A 3s (in my opinion) should not be used with the intent to increase wheel speed drastically with a puller, but rather to just increase the torque.

As far as durability goes, I put right at 11,000 mah (all 3s) through it on a hike this weekend. Every battery was back to back with little to no cool down time. Never missed a beat or let me down. The motor was hot. I am even using the stock esc (with a ccbec wired in) just to see if it could take it. So far everything is working like a champ. I also managed to spin the rear locker in the housing shearing off its "ears" in the diff case.

There are definitely better options for speed and for crawling individually, but I think the puller has its place for mix trail use. The wraith puts it at its edge just due to its shear size, but I am going to run it a while more to see if the motor can stand the high temps for extended periods of time (in my application). If not, I will order a HH crawl master with a waterproofed XL

Quick update:

I cut the tires up before the last trip. Stock the 2.2 claws were marginal at best, and left a lot to be desired. They seemed too stiff for the rocks, voids were not large enough to really pull on the dirt, and the compound seemed a bit hard for everything... especially if there was even the hint of water on the ground. My solution involved a specific front/rear cut. The rears were cut to push, the fronts needed a little more rubber on them to help steer and pull...

Here is what I came up with for the front:

Bottom line, cutting the claws makes them turn into a monster on the trail. There was a night and day difference over all terrains and conditions. Half way through the day last Saturday I managed to spin the rear locker in the housing when the both hooked up while spinning over a ledge...



At first when the rear tires stopped spinning the same speed as the fronts. I didn't know if I sheared a pin at the hex, broke an axle, or spun the locker. But the famous bulge was awaiting me when I looked at the carrier in the differential. You can see it circled in red in the picture above... Also, the removable diff cover is priceless for on the trail fixes. Thanks Axial for coming up with this design!

To fix this on the trail, a few friends and I came up with the below solution. It ended up holding up all day like you see it. To fix it I removed the locker and cleaned the broken ears out of the notches in the plastic carrier. Re-insert the locker in the "clocked position" and put two 3mm nuts (non-lock nuts) into the carrier as seen below. I then had to cut off the two stubs on the ring gear (with side cutters) so it would bolt back flush to the carrier.



It is a great trail fix to keep the fun going for the rest of the day. Just make sure you have hex drivers, pliers, a few nuts, and side-cutters in your daypack before heading out.

More parts are on the way, I will update as they come in

Finally got to sit down and do some work.

Under-drive gears front and rear with no-slop lockers and strc bearing caps.



Machined shock balls from Crawler Innovations



Made a Delrin battery and electronics tray. Now all the electronics are all under the hood. "





Vanquish c's, knuckles, diff covers, tierod and drag link. HD servo horn.







Vanquish SLW's. 1.35 wide, 600 hubs.



Relocated and flush mounted rear lights.



Got steering? Axial universals also got installed.





Still have to put in the 32P gearing and replace the last piece of plastic in the transmission. Also have to replace all the plastic flanged balls with steel for smoothness and durability.





I have some special tires coming. More details on that later.

Got the transmission updated with 32p gearing and the hardened transmission gears. These 32p gears are beef!



Also swapped out the uppers with some old kamikaze links I cut down to match the stock Wraith length. While I had the chassis torn down, I also went ahead and swapped in the axial metal balls in place of the plastic ones on the links and shocks.







The delrin upper links really helped to take the rest of the suspension slop out. I think I will eventually go with all titanium links in the future, but this will work for now.
