Hoosiers Rubi-Wraith

I jumped on the bandwagon and got one. I've got a ton of extras coming for it, this is going to be a long build. Here's how she's setup.

Dynamic Concepts Rubi panel kit
Dinky's "6 pack" roof
Dinky's drop tray cargo
Castle Mamba Max Pro esc
Tekin Redline 13.5t
32p gears
15t traxxas-60t Kimbrough
Hitech hs 665mg (i think) servo
HR heavy duty trans gear set
HR Chubs
HR knuckles
STRC Steering linkage
Level3 CMS kit
TSL Mud Slingers
Gmade GT beadlocks
RC4WD 100mm scale shocks w/ red boots and Rancho decals
ARB diff covers
Flysky GT3B rx/tx
billscustomrclighting 12 led set

I'm sure I'm missing something, but anyways. Here's the pics. Seems like a nice kit so far. http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...8/DSCF1726.jpg
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...8/DSCF1713.jpg
I painted the diff covers, and started detailing them just in time to order some ARB covers instead. I'll finish these up anyways.
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...8/DSCF1719.jpg
My tires showed up. Traded a 2S lipo for a set of TSL Mud Slingers on a set of Axials.
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...8/DSCF1715.jpg
Made some 2-stage foams, but they're to damn big
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...8/DSCF1720.jpg
Here's the axles and trans laid out. I've got Lucas Marine grease in the diff..
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...8/DSCF1714.jpg
One gripe I have is the plastic balls for the rod ends. I mean seriously...you spend $300 on the freakin thing and they give you plastic? Definately upgraded that to metal. Got the links installed on the axles.
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...8/DSCF1725.jpg
And finaly, a teaser of the body.

Was wondering when you where going to show it off.
Looks good. I like the painted gear cover. Would match my color.

Re: Hoosiers attempt at a Scale Rubicon Wraith

yeah, I cant get the damn paint to setup. IDK what the deal is. It's been 2 days and its still tacky to the touch. If they arent dry within the next day or so I guess I'll have to strip em and start over. I applied the white backer on my body panels last night just to find a run in the paint. This neon blue is a royal PITA

Re: Hoosiers attempt at a Scale Rubicon Wraith

I've got a Savox sc-1256tg servo, along with a Castle 10a bec coming soon. So that should take care of steering. My Mamba Max Pro has a built in BEC that goes up to 7.2 (i think) will this take place of the castle bec I just ordered, or will I still need to use the 10a castle external bec?

I cut the upper edge of the battery tray kinda like savage did on RCB and mounted it up front. Heres mockup.

I like your thinking once again! that 13.5t is sweet, I have one and love it!

Re: Hoosiers attempt at a Scale Rubicon Wraith

Your running the same setup as me. I run the external bec straight to the servo and let the internal bec on the mmp power the receiver.

Thanks for advise. I'll do the same."thumbsup"So did you bump the amps up from default on your mmp? Or did you leave it at 6? I cant see needing anymore power for the RX.

Thanks HD. I recieved a little note on my invoice from Holmes Hobbies saying he used the same setup in his too.

Re: Hoosiers attempt at a Scale Rubicon Wraith

I think I have my internal set to like 5.2. but yeah it won't need any more than six. Make sure to plug your external bec into the castle link prior to any wiring and set it up. I think the savox is 6. But you may want to check the specs on it. On 3s, stock spur, and 6degrees timing advance mine will do prob 30mph. And crawls like a champ. But with 32 pitch gears it will do 20mph on 2s, excellent low end and no over heating. I am very new at this still but I have put in some serious time reading this forum and it is a huge help and inspiration!

Hoosierdady 02-13-2012 09:30 AM

Re: Hoosiers attempt at a Scale Rubicon Wraith

timing advance is one thing I'm still in the dark on. I'll have to do some more research in that area. Not sure why it's needed or how it affects performance. I'm not new to RC, but the MMP is a high end piece of equipment that I'm not use to. I've always had lower end $30-40 esc's except for my VXL setup. So any advice is definately welcome. As it is now, I'm just reading directions and checking out other rigs. Monkey see, monkey do type stuff.

barnyard 02-13-2012 09:37 AM

Re: Hoosiers attempt at a Scale Rubicon Wraith

In the menu for the mmp you will find an advance tab with a cheat mode option. In that mode you can choose how many degrees to advance the timing and what rpm you want this to take place at. Becareful if you are running a high mah battery. you don't want to run for long periods of time on high advance or you will overheat. Or you do it however you want like I do and just check the heat periodically. You can also set like a 200 and something percent drag brake for just crawling.

Re: Hoosiers attempt at a Scale Rubicon Wraith

yeah I saw that. But with this b/l setup Im afraid it'll endo when I let out of the throttle at speeds. I'll start it at 80% I think and go from there.

I'm still running stock drive shafts. I got some steel rod at the hardware store and gorilla glued it in them.

hard to believe a wraith doing 20mph on 2s, when mine on 3s does MAYBE 15mph with 23/80t 48p gearing and the 13.5t tekin with slightly advanced timing.

Re: Hoosiers attempt at a Scale Rubicon Wraith

Im running a 15/60 setup in 32p on 3S. I'll try to find my Rc calc. and plug in the numbers to get a estimated mph. I'm hoping for close to 25 top end, but it is what it is. As long as I can get sideways in the dirt I'm happy.

barnyard 02-13-2012 05:05 PM

Re: Hoosiers attempt at a Scale Rubicon Wraith

I am running 14/58 32p on 3s 2650mah 40c. I am just guessing at mph. My eyes may be bigger than I think. lol. I do know sideways in the dirt is not a problem though. My buddy has a stock wraith with a 2s 5000mah 25c and mine on 2s 4000mah 20c and stock gears kills his in an ugly kinda way. We haven't raced with my 32p gearing.

Re: Hoosiers attempt at a Scale Rubicon Wraith

I got my HR knuckles and chubs in last night. As well as my hardened steel trans gears. Here's what the coffee table looked like last night.
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...8/DSCF1738.jpg
Love this Lucas Marine grease. Really sticky stuff.
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...8/DSCF1741.jpg
One issue I have are these HR knuckles. They appear to be for rear steer only unless you flip the chubs over and swap sides, etc. I've wrote a note to HR to ask for better directions on installing them. My knuckles dont have the 2 extra arms jutting out of the backside of them like the stock ones. I thought it was wierd, but they're for the Wraith so IDK. They kinda look like they're setup for rear steer only but I'm not sure. Maybe I'm just having a senior moment at 32. Any body got a pic of how their HR knuckles and chubs are mounted?

Hoosierdady 02-15-2012 11:13 AM

Re: Hoosiers attempt at a Scale Rubicon Wraith

Ok, I had to contact the guy at Bizarre Hobbies about the HR parts. The Chubs have to be flipped over in order for them to line up properly unless I want to go rear steer. Here they are. He said they're a direct replacement...I think not. They work perfect and as they should, but you have to flip the Chubs over to keep your axle shafts from pointing upwards or downwards instead of straight out like they should be.

Scariest soldering job to date, esp after I melted my dig switch the other night.
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...8/DSCF1742.jpg
My beautiful RC4WD scale shocks from Chiklet & red boots that I got from RC4WD. Just waiting on decals to finish these up. I've got a faux winch coming too. Due to the CMS, I cant run the plate that holds a winch, so I'm going to have to improvise here.

I've got some Dubro hinges and micro screws coming for the hood hinges. I'm working on some latches for it. I bench tested it with my 15/60 32p setup, and it doesnt seem like it's going to be very fast at this point. I've ordered a 55t (i think) spur. On 3S with my setup anybody got a idea as far as top speed? I'm running a smaller tire than stock. It looks to be about a 4 inch tire.

I'll be doing the same thing with the battery. Are you able to get the battery in and out easily with the rubicon body? It's hard to tell from the pic if the battery will slide in that gap.

Re: Hoosiers attempt at a Scale Rubicon Wraith

not sure yet. I havent got that far into the build.

Re: Hoosiers attempt at a Scale Rubicon Wraith

Well, I'm not getting as much interaction on this build as I do with my others for some reason. Oh well.

Ran the wiring for my esc and such. Here are some progress pics.
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...8/DSCF1845.jpg
Here are my shocks. Finaly done. I've got some soft springs coming from RC4WD.
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...8/DSCF1843.jpg
And here is a shot of the entire rig so far. I've got a smaller pinion coming soon, so progress is gonna be even slower until it gets here. But its all calibrated, programed and ready to run. Drove it across the floor last night (very slow due to no steering yet) and that slipper was going apeshit. Not sure if its to loose or what. Either way I gotta tear it all back down in a few days. But enough talk, here she is.

Nice build. Keep the posts coming.
I am interested in how you hinge the hood.
I have Rubi Wraith body too but not quite as far long in the build.

Re: Hoosiers attempt at a Scale Rubicon Wraith

Got most of my electronics ran yesterday. Ran my led wires, and started getting thinks locked down to finish the rig. I have a Red Bully Dog winch coming in soon too, gotta figure out how to cram that on the front end. Here are a few teaser shots. The battery tray fits perfect. I used some velcro to soften any vibrations from bashing. The battery pack clears the hood and everything just fine.

The damn Shoe Goo pulled my paint in a couple spots. I'm not thrilled with how the body turned out on this one, shoulda had it painted. I've got alot of money in the panels/paint/ etc and it doesnt really show it IMO. But oh well, still looks damn good.

Im still waiting on delivery of my kit and a bunch of parts, making it hard to look at all these awesome builds knowing mine is on a truck somewhere in transit! How did you mount the trimmed battery tray out front? I am planning to do the same. Did your rear axle go together smooth? No problems with the short side not seating all the way?

That looks nice! Where did you get that roof with the built in light bar?

Re: Hoosiers attempt at a Scale Rubicon Wraith

I think it looks pretty awesome. Dont let the places in the paint bother you. Once you get some drive time on it, it will get scratched/banged up anyway so you wont notice the bad places in the paint.

GaBronco, the kits now all come with a thinner flange on the rear axle shafts so you shouldnt have any trouble with the short side seating all the way.

Thats great news, hopefully i get one of the new style Kits. I ordered through RPP so i doubt they have any old stock really.

Re: Hoosiers attempt at a Scale Rubicon Wraith

the battery tray was easy. I cut the upper portion off, and used the long tab to mount it to the elect box under the hood. So it has a screw that goes through a hole I drill in the bottom of that box tht runs through the tray. The rest of it wont move because its a very tight fit. Im running a thin 3S pack, so I dont have to make room for a 2 inch thick battery.

Re: Hoosiers attempt at a Scale Rubicon Wraith

My damn Castle Mamba Max Pro is bad. Damn thing let out smoke twice last night. I havent even got to drive the SOB! All I did was program it with the link and remove the red wire off the servo plug for my Castle BEC (as directed by Castle) and this SOB has smoked out twice. I took it out of the rig completely and bench tested it, still had smoke rolling. Tried 2S and 3S. I'm so mad I cant see straight, and of course they arent f#%&*ing open on Saturdays (which pisses me off even more).

AH ha!! I understand what the issue with my Knuckles is now! Was sent the knuckles with the truck when I bought it used. I ended up using a mix of the original steering arms and moving the steering rod under everything in order to fit. I'll be doing some swapping back this evening and flipping the chubs :)

I love the shocks!!! Still a noob, so I gotta ask, are they the same length as the stock shocks? I will also be interested to hear how they work. Sorry to hear about your esc issues...I wouldn't even know where to start with something like that

looks great! Nice body work!!!

Hoosierdady 02-25-2012 11:30 AM

Re: Hoosiers attempt at a Scale Rubicon Wraith

94smasher- the shocks are 100mm rc4wd scale shocks. From what I've read the stockers are the same. I got my decals from RPP, boots from rc4wd and the shocks from chiklet on here. They are internal spring shocks. If you order a set, go ahead and order the super soft springs too. The stock springs in these are very stiff.

Dynamic- great job on the panels. I love the look. I would suggest making a roof for these. If you ever do I will definately be buying one from you. The V4 is nice, but the lines wont match up to the Rubi windshield. That is the one and only complaint I have on the Rubi kit. I highly suggest this panel kit to anybody!

Tozrovr-glad I could help man. I contacted Hot Racing about the fitment issue and was told "I thought I told you that" not very good customer service IMO, so trial and error was the solution.

I do want to take a second to thank a vendor, Three6 went above and beyond to help me out in contacting a vendor. Buddy, you didnt have to do that, but because you did I wanted to say again, thank you I recieved my product yesterday.

The esc is a manufacturer issue. I'm turning it in for warranty claim on Monday. Thanks for the compliments guys. It was a HUGE upset to work for weeks on this thing, get everything lined up to run it, just to hook up the battery and see smoke roll out. What a kick in the nads. Either way, it'll be alright, hopefully Castle makes it right.

Hoosierdady 02-25-2012 12:15 PM

Re: Hoosiers attempt at a Scale Rubicon Wraith

I've came to a stop on this until I get the esc lined out. I've got my leds ran and wired up, everything looks great! I've got 14 total so far. emphasis on "so far" lol. I've got a rc4wd bullydog red winch coming soon, some scale drilled brake rotors and I found some alloy center caps that will bolt on instead of rigging up these Axial covers I've got. I scrapped the hinge idea for now, they're to big and wierd looking. I was going to save these pics till later, but seeing as how I'm stuck on stupid till my esc gets fixed I figure wth, so with that being said...here ya go. A little Wraith porn for ya.
