Default Gearing?

I have a Scanner Rc Motor 13.5t 3100kv on a 3 cell 5000. It has a 80 tooth 48pitch HR metal spur. The smallest pinion i can fit is a 18 tooth and the motor is still getting Warm to Hot. What should i do.

Change to a 87 tooth spur. Thats what I did with mine then you can paly more with the pinion gear size to get the temps down and stay in the speed range. I am running a 87t spur and a 18t pinion and it has worked great for me but I am running brushed. My motor nor esc ever get hot to touch. It should be about the same with brushless.

I was just fixin to tellyou that the stock gear was 80t. You can usually find a new one on the net or at the hobby shop for under $10 That is one reason I leave mine plastic. I try to make it my weak point since it isn't hard to replace and it is fairly cheap.

Yes, a 2s lipo would significantly reduce the operating temps. And total power output.

Just curiously, why can't you fit a pinion smaller than 18t?

I'm running a 17t pinion with an 8.5 Novak motor on 2s. But that is just for high speed snow bombing, it definitely lacks crawlability.

Running the Axial underdrive gears front and rear would also help lower the final drive ratio about another 7%.

The motor wont slide over far enough to let the gears Mesh. I guess this motor isnt a true 540 size can.

Take a small round file to the mounting slots and make them a tad longer. Likely very little filing to get it to work properly. Or a small Dremel bit would work, too.

I switched to 32p and had just enough room to go 56/10 ran out of slot and the motor is against the trans also. Smoked the stock motor on 3s within about 20min esc wasn't even warm. Didn't expect that with the gear change but now I can order the new motor from HH as soon as it's available.

well i got a 87 tooth for a traxxas and put a 17 tooth on it and in the yard the motor runs cool as could be. But when your out crawling with it, it gets hot as could be. So i will have to try 15tooth or maybe i was thinking putting a Fan on the motor. As it is set up now it runs about 8-9 mph so if i put a 15 on it ill loose some wheel speed and that may hurt. what do you think. I guess i need to get my hands on a Novak motor.
