Battery Help/Questions

Like my other threads asking for assistance.....
This is my first RC and my first build. That said i am just about done and need help with batteries and a charger. Here is what i am running and hoping for some battery and then charger ideas:
  • Holmes Hobbies Crawl Master 13t Team Edition
  • Holmes Hobbies BR-XL
  • Hitec 7495 Servo
  • MIP drive shafts
  • Robinson Racing gears/Spur
  • ETC
I plan to have the battery up front. What battery should i be looking at?
(I honestly know know not much about batteries other than what i have been able to research)

Lastly, what charger? I have been looking at the Duratrax Onyx 245...

Thank you for any help or guidance!
Sean

Re: Battery Help/Questions

I'm running a 6000 mah lipo hard case up front with the CKRC battery plate. My Wraith runs for an hour on that battery. I'm using a Traxxas do everything charger.

Easy answer...whatever will fit. Alternatively to the previous post, I easily get an hour out of a 2200 3 cell LiPo, but that's mostly crawling and/or some easy trail running.

Re: Battery Help/Questions

I use a 3000 mah 3s and get about 45min to an hour out of it. The way I do mine is I have everything up front and I mount the battery on it's side next to where the firewall will be.

I run 3300 3S Nanotec Turnigy lipos under the hood, upright, next the firewall where the ESC used to sit.. ESC is now in the back on a Custom made Lexan plate.. There is room for a larger battery, but I get over an hour from my 3300mAh, so why carry around more weight on the truck up high...?

I run a 2S 5000mah with stock 20t motor and 18t pinion and get over an hour out of it.

I'm switching to some 3000mah 3S shortly and expect a little less than half that, which I'm fine with.

I'm running 1300mah Turnigy 3s lipo laid down between front shock mounts on plate I made. Get good runtime with FXR, Titan 21T and 14/56 gears....about 40 minutes.

That's pretty much the same charger as this, with the exception is the Thunder is $15 cheaper.
Thunder AC6 Smart LiPo Balance Charger/Discharger w/ AC Adapter for 1-6 Lipo/ 1-15 Nimh + USB to PC Software

I've had good luck with the Gens Ace batteries from hobbypartz as well.

I just picked up 32 pitch gears yesterday 56/12 and going with Brood 30t so that's exciting that you run that long on a charge.

Also, did you have to notch the motor plate more to get the motor to slide up to the spur better? I know with stock spur and 18t pinion I can't go any further with 48 pitch gears without making mods to the motor plate.

Re: Battery Help/Questions

A lot of people use the Thunder charger including myself Thunder AC6 Smart LiPo Balance Charger/Discharger w/ AC Adapter for 1-6 Lipo/ 1-15 Nimh + USB to PC Software

I've never had any issues with it. Charges everything, balance charges, digital readout and monitoring, etc. I'm also using 4000 mAh Sky Lipos and haven't had any issues with them.

Re: Battery Help/Questions

I didnt have to notch it at all fits just fine.

I run a gens aces 40c 4400man 4s with the same esc and motor as you and 56/14 32p gearing, and its fawking awesome.

Re: Battery Help/Questions

I run a Speedpak 2s 5000Mah Lipo and get over 50 min of runtime "thumbsup"

As for a charger I would get the Hitec X4, one of the best chargers out there you can charge 4 batteries at one time. This charger does everything and you can charge up to 6 Amps and balance at the same time.

Thanks Scott

Crawlster 09-13-2012 10:17 AM

^^x2 that's what i use, it does everything and does it well, not cheap though, and like with most you will need a power supply
