Deep water/mud is not in the plan for this.

Red clay here is horrible. They sell Hawaiian Red Dirt shirts here that are colored/dyed with red dirt. It's permanently part of whatever it gets on.

The Stig would be orange if I hit a mud hole.

Speaking of clay and red dirt, I've been offered an entire off-road park to use for pics and video when this thing is up and running. Everything rom sand to red dirt to moon rocks (coral). I've got so many ideas on the types of shots I want to get that I'm thinking about building a camera rig (chase truck) just to shoot video with. I'll also have to build mounts for the camera to mount it in various locations on the Ultra4 rig.

Great news...kind of.

Michelle from Krawler Konceptz sent me a PM...

"Looks like you need help with decals for your drive flanges."

Apparently Rob was browsing the thread, saw my abject failure with my effort on the drive flange decals, and had Michelle contact me. We talked for a while today and it seems that Krawler Koncepts will be making not only the Solid drive flange decals, but also a complete set of Warn 9.0 RC decals. If it's on the 1:1 Warn, I'll have it on mine. Should be a new product for them.

Michelle will also be making a set of their Inside Skins for this rig. I'm pretty stoked about that. Means I won't have to order 10 colors of paint and have it shipped in.

Working with Michelle also means that I have to HTFU and get my side panel design finalized and get them shipped off so she can get proper templates for these panels. In her words, "I'm going to hound you until you get them to me."

I'm also placing an order with Norm from Team3six for a few more scale items. The Stig should be properly secured in the cockpit thanks to Norm.

I know I haven't done much lately - been fighting a headache for the past three days.

Frdtrkguy, speaking of Hawaii...this dude snuck up on the kids today while they were snorkeling.

They were SCREAMING! DAD! DAD! BIIIIG TURTLE!

I told them it was OK, that it wasn't going to eat them, it just wanted to come on shore.

"If you see one, just get out of the way. You're in it's house so let it go where it wants."

State and Federal laws protect these guys, and you're supposed to stay 6 feet from them, but like the kids found out, sometimes you turn around and it's right in your face.

Started sorting out electronics placement. I like to use the 400W gun with 1/4" tip for power cabling.

Motor and ESC are wired. RX8 is mounted on the carbon STRC Exo steering brace with some industrial type Velcro. Need to heat shrink the female terminals on the motor.

Got some black bolts from RC4WD for the lugs.

Got confirmation that batteries are on the way from Thunder Power so when they arrive I'll make a new battery mount that is 2S/3S compatible to clear the SuperShafty input shaft.

Kool idea using bullit connectors on the motor, easy motor swap if needed.

That's with stock RX8 programming on 2S. Linear throttle curve and stuff. After this test run I broke out Tekin's Hotwire and commenced programming. I should get more test runs in and the ESC fully programmed tomorrow. A 3S pack is on the way so that will be the ticket when I want more oomph. I've found that I needed to crank the Slash slipper WAY down to the point that it's TIGHT and you can still hear it launch "on the slipper". That's fine, should save the driveline. Should.

That rollover was due to something you couldn't see - the rear steer. I have the rear steer EPAs adjusted for max steering without hitting the links/shocks. I have more steering in the rear than the front. Great for crawling, sketchy when you're winding it out. I'm just glad I'm still quick enough to anticipate when/how to drive out of it.

Thanks, guys. One of the things I wanted to do on this test run was to also test shooting video to see if I could get what I wanted into the video. Seems I'll have to slow portions down during editing so you can actually see what's going on. Not sure if you could tell or not, but the rig was airborne over the curb and it yanks the front on acceleration.

Even though this is only one camera view that I wanted to test, I learned that the GoPro can get in the way - like when I climbed those rocks. First attempt (first video I shot but didn't post) sucked - I got the GoPro stuck on the rocks. So...I had to adjust my driving from "driving the rig" to "driving the rig with GoPro". Damn thing forced me to take a line I normally wouldn't. One of the high-speed views should be interesting.

solution...build a chase truck, with media support.

How is your steering rack link holding up? Mine is pretty wonky after a few runs. The slop is where the bearings seat in the large diameter holes. I have the stock Axial link on now. Didn't really like the look/feel of the carbon STRC one.
Going to look at it in the next few days and see if I can come up with something that is better.

I plan to replace the carbon steering rack with the Axial upgrade unit.

I didn't like the stock linear throttle curve on the RX8. Went into programming and gave it a much better curve.

While in the programming I also found a couple of other things I didn't like. You can't set the time for the reverse delay and when you enable reverse you can only adjust your throttle curve for forward motion. You can't dial in a reverse curve. With this much power that's something I wanted to do, so I had to do that in the Futaba radio.

I really wish I could adjust the time of the reverse delay.

So now that it's in running form, I just need to get all of this stuff placed and get the wiring sorted.
