W.O.D. inspired family 4 seater buggy, "Southern Comfort" by CFM

I have a thread in the Wraith section on this build but just wanted to do a build thread just on this part of the build and not the progression of the Wraith over time and seeing as how the only part left that of the Wraith will be the skid.
Buggy is based off the 4 seater Revolution chassis by W.O.D. and one of Woodlee's earliest builds. He has the best eye for these style rigs and aren't just skeletons like the other buggies being built in that style.
I have enlisted Tyler from the Dinky RC garage to handle the chassis work as I'm to busy these days and he seems to have a good eye for this style rig.
Parts list will be updated here as I piece it together.

Dinky RC built chassis
Carter Fab & Machine panels
Hitec 7955TG
Holmes Crawlmaster 13t
FXR Pro w/ 4s capacitor
Castle BEC
Gt3B
C.L.A.W winch
Heyok no drift winch controller
Axial AX-10 metal gear trans w/ Crawler InNovations Maxx outputs
Maxx shafts
Team 3six seats
Team 3six limit straps
Team 3six fire extinguisher
Team 3six gauge panels

Proline scale accessories
Full light kit
Exo Griffin radiator
RC4WD King dual rate coil overs
The Scale Shop Versante bead locks with custom rings and CFM scale lug mod
Crawler InNovations DD closed cell foams
Axial R35 Ripsaws(until the proper scale tires start being offered in the right compound)

Rest of the parts most everyone knows what they look like and will show up as the build progresses unless you request pics and that's no problem.

Right now I'm torn on which axles to run. It will be between the "Titan 60" axle housings or the "Ultimate 9" axle housings. Here is a link to the axles: http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/axial...-complete.html, http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/axial...-post-2-a.html
The Titans are finished and were sent for mockup. The 9s are nearing completion.

Yes sir they are. I stock up on them so I can modify all my wheels when needing that extra little touch.

Here is a pic of the rear axle ready to be sent off an have the truss and link mounts welded up. Got the lockouts drilled an tapped this morning and just need to make the shafts but that will be a quickie.

The "Ultimate 9" housings definitely have the wow factor over the "Titan 60" housings but the rear links are going to be tricky with the extreme offset rear diff. Decisions decisions!!!

I've been doing research for my custom AR60 axle build and came across your stuff. I've been really impressed with your work and you have inspired me to get these axles done. "thumbsup"

I am looking forward to this build; I'm a big fan of Adam's work and I think you will do him right. 8)

Thanks man, love all of your builds as well, always top notch stuff. The custom axle housings I build is the only thing I can do to really separate me from the pack at this point I think. Haven't seen anyone else hacking up perfectly good housings that cost a few hundred dollars before the work even begins. Gotta pay to play.
And some of the scale detail going into the rigs these days, Norm(cough cough), is insane.
In case you haven't seen all my scaler axles or want work done here is a link. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/axles...-housings.html

Little something to cover the servo under the hood. Have another one coming that has a blower on it. Nice part is they easily break down for fitment and customization. They also are the perfect size for Wraith sized builds. Set it in my chassis last night and fits perfect where the stock electronics box used to fit.

You can get them on eBay and possibly local toy store. They are the engine upgrades for the Cars 2 toys. Just type in ridemakerz on eBay and it will bring the stuff up. The oil pan is also hollowed out on these as well for possibly a small receiver or something.

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback, it's what keeps a build like this going and the money spending. Hahaha
Got the shocks ordered this morning and fixing to box up the rear axle to get sent off for some tiny Tig welding.
Dang rear axle link mounts are 2" wider apart than a stock housing and the offset diff will make for an interesting problem for link placement. Not looking forward to that part.

Well the axle housing is sent off to be Tig welded. I also made a blueprint of the shafts and sent it off to have some titanium shafts cut for the rear as well. Just didn't feel comfortable using a lesser grade material on an axle shaft that is 7.4375 long, plus I get to have two more Vendors of the site included on this build.
Thanks to Bill @ BGR Fab and Bob @ CBRB

Didn't want to hijack your thread. I bought two sets of the LockedUp proto hubs and painted them up this weekend. Used Model Masters Brass #1782 to give them the Warn Premium Hub look.

I don't see why not. It shouldn't hurt any thing, the speed control may not get the full voltage it needs though. I'm not sure if you could use a CC BEC for it if it takes away to much power from the esc. Also if you use a multi channel radio with mixing and a multiple outputs on your receiver would work also.

Hoosierdady 07-18-2012 07:19 AM

Re: W.O.D. inspired family 4 seater buggy, "Southern Comfort" by CFM

I know that with the Novak escs they have a deal for lights on there. They are supposed to brighten and dim as you drive. I wonder if this type of power would be enough to operate a micro servo? The only downside would be that you had a Novak esc though, so the benefit probably wouldnt outweigh the negative.

Clay, thank you for the compliment. The detail on your axles is amazing. It is great seeing the products being put out by Texas vendors such as yourself, TSS and Locked Up.

Well how's about this for some scale axle detail porn. Might have to put a poll up on which axles should finally go under this rig. This is the rear BlackRock 60 housing complete minus link mounts.

Easy. All you need is a Y servo cable. Connect one end to the RX, one of the Y leads to the ESC, and the other Y lead to the "throttle" servo. The servo will move according to how much throttle input you give.
Microgoat used this technique to make a working tachometer.

So this plug I have should work? It has a male end on one and the other has a dual female socket. Just plug male in to RX where the esc was and then the esc and servo into the other? Or have to be the y harness you listed?http://img.tapatalk.com/4ac5ba84-1bdf-a91a.jpg

That cable should work. It looks like it is the same idea as a Y cable.

You could just test it with 2 servos and make sure they turn together.

CarterFab 07-18-2012 02:52 PM

Good deal. I pulled it off an old TLT that was running dual servos through this. I guess now the only concern is voltage?

If it was running dual servos then it should work perfect for you.

How many volts do you run to your RX to run the speed control? Even most micro servos are rated for 6.0V.

I believe it's probably 6v. Eddie(novasark) usually sets all my electronics up for me, it's the last piece of the puzzle I still haven't gotten really comfortable with. Electronics that is. I really need to learn that end of the spectrum better.

It's not that bad once you have done it a few times.

I hope to see it working when I get back from the lake. :ror:
