Harley's Ibex Goat Built Wraith http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...10-600x400.jpg I recently bought out a friend of mines RC stash. In it was a well built Wraith, I threw it up for sale last week but it didn't sell. So I decided I might as well do something with it. Here is the base truck http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...319_212136.jpg I watch Pirate4x4 pretty closely and the Goat Built rigs have been popping up quite a bit. They have an awesome chassis setup for you to build it yourself. So I decided I would use their design as my base. So first thing I did was work it all out in CAD. http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...322_180056.jpg |
Re: Harley's Ibex Goat Built Wraith Today I worked up the design further and got my chassis plans finalized. I simplified the joints on all the tubes so I could more easily get them cut and bent before welding with minimal flitting. http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...323_162448.jpg http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...323_162307.jpg Several of the tubes are 45'd for ease of assembly/fabrication. http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...323_162323.jpg Then I potted out all the templates for each tube. This makes everything SUPER easy. http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...323_162242.jpg |
Re: Harley's Ibex Goat Built Wraith Tonight I went down to the shop and started to get to work. http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...323_184836.jpg Each tube is easy to measure and cut to length with minimal work. http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...323_193502.jpg Also my new fab table has been super handy! http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...323_192610.jpg |
Re: Harley's Ibex Goat Built Wraith The cab area came together quickly. http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...323_202900.jpg Everything is matching up with the templates, success. http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...323_202919.jpg I wrap a little masking tape on the tubes and then mark the bend points front the templates. Works out really well. http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...323_225921.jpg |
Re: Harley's Ibex Goat Built Wraith Checked the templates again, still on track! http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...323_225955.jpg But then disaster... I ran out of gas for the TIG. FAWK!!! So I mocked up a few more of the bent tubes I already had done. Tomorrow I'm going to try an outside chance I have at getting a bottle of gas. Otherwise I'll have to wait until Monday. http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...323_235857.jpg http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...323_235922.jpg |
Re: Harley's Ibex Goat Built Wraith Off to a great start! "thumbsup" |
Re: Harley's Ibex Goat Built Wraith Cheater.:ror: those templates are nice man! I dig the goat chassis' too. |
Re: Harley's Ibex Goat Built Wraith Quote:
I tried this once before but honestly using a MIG welder was just too much clean up and I wasn't ready to do that much work. I picked up the Thermal Arc 95S TIG a couple weeks back and am having a blast using it. It is making this whole process go very quickly an there is almost zero cleanup needed after welding. It's a great little kit for under $400. |
Re: Harley's Ibex Goat Built Wraith I am digging it! My son and I made a pre-K project in a very similar way, a diamond plate and 3d metal-faced pumpkin. He helped weld it. Seeing a chassis laid out like this makes me wanna do one! |
Re: Harley's Ibex Goat Built Wraith You seem to have all the cool toys, I'm stuck using mapp/oxy to braze. Any way, looking killer as always, I'll be watching."thumbsup" |
Re: Harley's Ibex Goat Built Wraith Looking good Bud - And I have to agree, those templates make building a cookie cutters dream. |
Re: Harley's Ibex Goat Built Wraith Wow! Looking good... Subscribed.... |
Re: Harley's Ibex Goat Built Wraith looks good cant wait to see this one built |
Re: Harley's Ibex Goat Built Wraith Great set up! Look great. I had an old Creative Director that always said, "work smarter, not more". So true. So true. |
Re: Harley's Ibex Goat Built Wraith very awesome build. when i clicked on this i was exspecting a pile of vp parts and photos i was reworded with a sweet build |
Re: Harley's Ibex Goat Built Wraith No luck on finding any argon yet but there is still a chance. I'm going to get the rest of the bars cut and bent in case I can source some. I've got about 5 hours in the chassis up to this point. I think another 3 hours and I'll have the base done. Then I can get the drivetrain swapped over and I can set shock mounts and angles. Looking forward to seeing it come together in the end. I didn't pay attention to width compared to a Wraith so I don't know how a stock interior or hood will fit. I will likely try and form a custom hood for this out of carbon fiber in the end. |
Re: Harley's Ibex Goat Built Wraith now thats cool |
Re: Harley's Ibex Goat Built Wraith Came down to the shop for a few minutes, still no word on the gas. The Wraith interior drops right in, perfect width. http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...324_135611.jpg http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...324_135626.jpg The hood width is good but the grill height will have to be worked out. http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...324_135637.jpg |
Re: Harley's Ibex Goat Built Wraith Looking great so far, Harley. |
