Default Bearings vs. Bushings

I've been reading in many threads about the swap from bearings on the pinion shaft to Traxxas bushings. What is the advantage of the swap other than not having to worry about dirty bearings anymore?

Thanks!

Pinion bearings don't hold up very good. Seems after one run there sloppy loose. I haven't upgraded to bushings yet but I will. This weekend I'll rebuild my rear axle with under drive gears and pinion bushing

Bushings don't fail, they just wear out. That is something you can monitor much easier. The Bearings WILL fail if you are running big power. When that happens you WILL destroy your gears, even HD gears.

It's cheap insurance.

Also if you play in the mud and water alot. Seized bearings are not fun to deal with if the inner race is just about fuzed to whatever its on

Is there a write up on the swap?

Has anyone ever replaced the stock bearings with sealed ceramic bearings? I couldn't imagine replacing a bearing with a bushing!

The bulletproof guide at the top of this section has a part number. Buy them where ever you choose.

I'll do one right now:
Remove bearing.
Insert bushing.
Drive truck.

It's just not worth the cash. The bushings are still going to be stronger, 1/10th the price, and easy to replace. The additional drag is really just not noticeable.

Thanks everyone for the help! I'll go grab some bushings from my LHS, then. It might also be a good idea to shim the gears while I'm installing the bushings.

I use the traxxas bearings in my wraith I think I have a few left to replace. the ones ive been buying have the blue rubber seal an when I put them in I use a little dab of anitseize compound on the shaft keeps it from seizeing together.

The point is not that the bearings quality is the issue, it's that a 5x11x4 bearing is just not capable of handling the power of these high power brushless rigs for long periods of time when driven to the limit and in extreme conditions.

I changed bearings 4 or 5 times. Traxxas bearing last no longer the what comes with the kit. Literally get only s few minutes till the torn to slop or grenade. But I do run more power through them than most.

What driveshafts are you all using? I never blew out a pinion bearing using "stock" plastic shafts, no matter the power. I bought a set of junfacs hardened shafts and within 2 weeks I had bearing failure. The junfacs simply don't slide in and out very well at all under load. I attribute my bearing failures to these shafts.

You could never transfer the power of a big motor through plastic shafts (stock style, not saying Emax). I think your opinion of power is different than what we are talking about.

MIP shafts are the norm for high power situations. Junfacs aren't quite up to the task and are more likely to break a pin or the actual engagement area on the end of the female side.

2800kv with 3S is the power I had in there. I don't need anymore. Do the MIPs extend and contract smoother under load? If so they will be added to my list.

I don't actually own a wraith, but I am running wraith axles in a custom brushless buggy, this is why this thread got my attention.

It's actually a Tazer 2800 brushless brand motor. Nothing special but runs pretty good. I have a CC 3800kv and just got a Team Icon 17.5 sensored motor in there now for some better low speed control. The 3800 was just too fast to do any crawling, the Icon seems to run pretty nice.

They seem to work very well. My assumption is since they are splined better than the Junfacs they reduce the pressure on the contact area.
