"Ball Pein Hammers" tear down after a G6- what to really expect

First of all there is nothing better than being a competitive natured dude in the RC Scaler scene...I LOVE IT! But whether you are or not there are certain things that take place that make you be a big boy and wrench a bit just to maintain. Trust me I used to be that guy, NON Maintenance, just giver hell and forget about what the outcome is.

In this thread I'm going to give you a step by step of my tear down after a 200 gates in one day, with mud, water, and rocks. Oh and freekin "Scale Horspower", which is a big factor. Keep in mind in this thread Ill talk about my bearing around the pinion shaft (damn critical with horsepower in wraith axles) and all the other bearing a crap that you don't see unless tore down!! Come along now!

1st thing first, lets set her up and pull her shoes off and get some stuff broke lose. I try to do this fast after a tough run because rust sets in and destroys, plus the mud just get harder and harder to get off.

As you see here the grass gets nested up around the hubs inside the wheels. Bad stuff as it holds rocks and other foreign objects that cause unnecessary ware.
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/07/23/y9ary9av.jpg
After you get your shoes off you can pull the axles and see whats in store for you. It sucks but has to be done.
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/07/23/e5a4uru8.jpg
Once the axles are pulled out, get a pic and start cleaning the heads of the screws out so you can get your driver in there without the strip effect.

This is a pic of the diff cover pulled. Now just imagine what could of happened if you didn't start this crappy clean up!!!

Next we will get into the axle deeper. Might even give a lil love to a brand new Hitec 7955 that made the voyage. ALL THIS IS A MUST
Thanks for looking

As I get further in the axles I start finding really bad stuff happenin. Now these axles did have run time on them so can exactly tell you how long but the bearings were fine and everything had grease. As I tear into them I find out quick a whole new bearing kit from Fast Eddies is in order.
Attachment 247532
As I said before the lockers and gears looked new until the G6
Attachment 247533
The knuckle bearing really took a beating. Maybe had something to do with the lose o the passenger axle

This is a pic of the axle that made it. Notice the Bent to hell pin

Next post ill discuss the servo. I'll show you the inside of a new Hitec after a 200 plus gate event.

That was a good g6 we had..the mud took its toll on alot of trucks. Novaks and castles were going up in smoke, my t3kin kept right on trucking. Waterproofing and spraying the truck down with wd40 the night before will help with the rust and cleanup. My biggest problem and critical area is going to be replacing all the drive pins on everything. I kept snapping them during the recon on the slipper, wheel hexes, and mip's. "thumbsup"

My MMP and Pro 4 held up flawlessly. Harley and I finished first stage together. He helped me limp through last 20 gates do to front CVD pin chop lol. Oh and my MMP had no fan.

HAfter I got the axles tore apart I put all the hardware on some bucket of cleaner. This will remove all grease, rust etc. you can see the lockers floating around.

After I get em all cleaned the bearings will be replaced by Fast Eddie bearings. The old ones that survived will be put in my pit bag.

The reason new bearing are important is the fact the pinion shaft bearings just don't hold up long with a lot of "Big" horsepower. Remedy new bearings often if your racing. If the bearing goes most of the time your diff gears an pinion will be had. Another remedy is the brass bushings from Vanquish. Harley is running those now and testing. Check out his "Hit and Run" build for updates. Attachment 247559

Wish there was more interest in scale comps over her in Idaho, sounds like you guys had a blast.

That inner knuckle bearing to me seems to be a weak point. Doesn't matter if the bearing is brand new or seen some run time. It will emplode on itself.

I still haven't seen the reasoning behind buying fast eddy packaged bearings.

Hopefully your phones on the charge.

Good idea for a thread. I do this to 3 wraiths after each event. And we just added a 4th to the fleet. G6 family 8)

Ohhh I use Boca bearing oil in all my bearings. Thought about some abec 5 bearings but I really don't think a higher dollar bearing is going to lastmuch if any llonger in bashing crashing environment. All it takes us one hard impact and the bearing is weekend or spitting itself apart.

Mighty1 07-23-2013 03:09 PM

Well I hope this thread get people to realize the damage faster than it took me. Lol I've been messing with RC for 5 or so years now and seen a lot of preventable damage happen.

I also like the seals and o ring around the output
Attachment 247719
Bit since I cracked her open I did decide to freshen up the seals and board with Dielectric grease. Put her back together and just put a touch of liquid tape around seams for good measure. Attachment 247720
