Default Axle gone bad?

im not sure quite wtf is happening on this one and im kinda stumped???

I serviced my kids wraith tonight to find after installing the stock gearset in the rear axle, to find it binds the crown/pinion ONLY when i slap in the x2 screws into the hub on the one side.

Ive looked at the shafts themselves to see if these were warped or bent but they look in great shape. The axle is not damaged other then typical scuffs from driving the rig. Bearings are in mint shape....

Even the crown and pinion are not damaged?

for some unknown reason its only when i attempt to install these last two screws into the left hub??

any ideas where this is going??

thanks in advance!

is the parts in question the stock plastic chubs and axle housing? it could be the screws are going in too far now due to wear or compression of the plastic that is allowing the screws to contact the axle shaft--BTDT

Double check that the inside pinion bearing is seating completely and there's no gunk preventing it. Occasionally stuff gets between those two bearings.

ok!!!

figured this mystery out!
i installed a new crown and pinion....FAIL!
Started looking at everything again to find out that the one hub was
not resting completely on the axle. (not going far enough and still visually
could see the grooves).

Pulled the short driveshaft out and grinded off the ridge where it rested on
the differential.

FIX!!

this ridge was pressing the differential hard onto the pinion and causing my dilemna.

This is what is referred to as the short axle shaft issue. There is a whole thread on it. The early Wraiths had a short shaft that was out of spec.

i remember hearing of this issue but it never crossed my mind until you mentioned it.

ill have to grab a new short shaft another time, but for now this will have to do. Its on a stock setup for now anyhow so if it fails ill replace whatever blows up in my face. lol

thanks for the replies!
