Crawler Innovations "Big Blue" - 2.2 KOH Crawler; wraith based I purchased this rig from Szczerba last year. He has a detailed build thread here: http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/2-2-s...mblin-koh.html I mailed my wraith axles, scx trans and electronics from the White Lightning Wraith to Szczerba. The build thread on that wraith is here: http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/axial...ng-wraith.html Szczerba installed the parts and mailed me the rig. All it needed was wheels & tires, a battery and some minor tweaking. It's been to a number of National & local G6's. It's also been used as a test truck for Crawler Innovations products. The axles have seen better days, and the truck is due for a complete rebuild. I figured now would be a good time to create a build thread and share the truck. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7442/...0414ca8c_o.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7072/...4a772327_o.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7200/...f0aeef3e_o.jpg https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2829/...6b50a72f_o.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7064/...f123845c_o.jpg https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2908/...f470a0d4_o.jpg |

Re: Crawler Innovations "Big Blue" - 2.2 KOH Crawler; wraith based I have a number of upgrades planned for the rebuild. I have been collecting parts for over 6 months now. All new axles are up first: https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2929/...5a84984c_o.jpg A huge Thank you to Vanquish Products for their support. Thank you for allowing me to continue to be a Team VP driver. "thumbsup" When you want the best in aftermarket quality, No One beats Vanquish Products. We have come to learn the stock axle pinion bearings can't handle the load of 4S & 4 pole brushless. I will be installing bushings for the pinion. We have also come to learn that not all gear sets have the same gear mesh or teeth contact. The Axial Under Drive gear set has the best gear mesh and the lowest gearing @ 3.30 (IMO A gear set be offered in 4.30 or a ratio closer to a 1:1 crawler). The Kyosho steel shims are a must when setting ring and pinion back lash. The new axles will have these parts installed: https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2882/...a2dcf53c_o.jpg |

Re: Crawler Innovations "Big Blue" - 2.2 KOH Crawler; wraith based I like my builds to be clean and simple. The wiring under the hood of this rig is a mess. I lost the CC MMP 1Cell ESC last October at Crawlapalooza when the fast moving stream carried this rig down stream and deposited it in a four foot deep pool. The ESC had not been waterproofed and it fried the micro processor. I installed a MMP to keep it running for local events, but the wiring was a mess. Have you noticed how the Castle BEC's have 1 foot of RX wire? LOL Welcome to OverkillRC - Overkill RC has the fix for messy wiring: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3749/...84b30d59_o.jpg The pair with blue handles is a ratcheting crimping tool for servo/RX wires. I have tried other cheaper tools and they suck. These tools I purchased from Austin at Overkill RC work amazing. I have used them to clean up the wiring on several drift cars and crawlers already. If you build a lot of rigs, these are tools worth buying."thumbsup" |
Re: Crawler Innovations "Big Blue" - 2.2 KOH Crawler; wraith based Amazing Rig. Looks pretty dang real. What are you running for the upper links? Same as the lowers but with a bend? |
Re: Crawler Innovations "Big Blue" - 2.2 KOH Crawler; wraith based Thanks for posting those shims. I have been looking for a good source for the 10x12's. |
Crawler Innovations "Big Blue" - 2.2 KOH Crawler; wraith based Nice to see the rebuild. It needed some TLC. |
Re: Crawler Innovations "Big Blue" - 2.2 KOH Crawler; wraith based Looks like a killer rig, great styling too. I'll be lurking around following this rebuild for sure. |

Re: Crawler Innovations "Big Blue" - 2.2 KOH Crawler; wraith based Let's get started: https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2869/...50faee86_o.jpg I decided to build an all new trans for Big Blue instead of a rebuild of the old one. I'm going to use the build up of the trans to demonstrate some mods that can be done to any SCX / AX Trans. Parts List: VP Trans Housing BWD FOFF Motor Plate Axial Top Gear & Shaft RRP Steel Idler Gear RRP Steel Output Gear C.I. 5mm Steel Lightened Long Front Output C.I. 5mm Steel Lightened Long Rear Output RRP Steel 60T / 32P Spur Gear (For Traxxas E Revo) combined with RRP Steel 88T / 48P Spur Assembly (For Axial SCX/ AX) https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3756/...809cfb74_o.jpg |
Re: Crawler Innovations "Big Blue" - 2.2 KOH Crawler; wraith based The previous trans in Big Blue used an Axial plastic trans case and Kimbrough 62T 32P Spur gear. Although they never gave me a problem, if and when an errant pebble got in there to destroy the plastic spur, it was an hour to R&R the part. I knew on the rebuild I wanted a steel pinion and spur. I also wanted to gear down from before. On the final trans, I used the backing plate from this kit: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3801/...9a7e6086_o.jpg The stock plastic housing is cheap and effective, but for tight tolerances... As an example, the previous trans is pictured below, notice how the RRP Axial Slipper plate hits the BWD motor plate: https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2863/...e99807ef_b.jpg Same trans, but with the Axial slipper unit: https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2937/...69e78b53_o.jpg Same trans, but with the RRP #7960 60T Steel gear for the Traxxas E Revo Modified to the stock Axial Slipper: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3716/...2743d439_o.jpg https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2850/...2650eec8_o.jpg Here is the gear modified to fit the stock Axial Spur Gear Assembly: https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2834/...25426bbb_o.jpg I modifed the gear using my dremel and a diamond wheel point. It cuts very quickly: A link to the bit is here: 7122 Diamond Wheel Point / Model: 7122 I have also done this mod using a small round hand file. It's a cheap and easy way to get more steel spur gear gearing options. I use a modified 56T steel spur gear on my AR60 based Monster Truck that is a pure basher on 3S lipo and 4 pole 3800KV brushless. Here's a video of the MT in action: <iframe src="//www.youtube.com/embed/AA5Zjs-yT8g" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" width="560"></iframe> With Big Blue it was important to me to gear down for a smoother start up and greater drag break. The 60T E revo gear will accomplish that a lot more than the 56T from the slash. If you do this mod, you will need three custom length bolts to mount the spur gear to the slipper unit. I used 10mm length with 3mm aluminum spacers to get the exact length I wanted. The spacers also help to hold the spur gear securely. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7079/...0055af4f_o.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3689/...bb9e1e8c_o.jpg https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2875/...07902cbe_o.jpg 8) |

Re: Crawler Innovations "Big Blue" - 2.2 KOH Crawler; wraith based Continuing on with Big Blue: RRP which is short for Robinson Racing Products; finally released a New Steel Output gear this year"thumbsup" For years now I have used the Hard Anodized Aluminum gear with no real failures to report. I have always wanted steel from an American Made company and now we have it. https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2859/...409c1122_o.jpg Here's the aluminum version: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7246/...d144f0b3_o.jpg RRP released a Wraith part # Steel idler gear last year that is a couple dollars more than the existing SCX / SX part # Steel idler gear. Steel Wraith: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7243/...87c74426_o.jpg Steel AX: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3753/...f6cec67f_o.jpg In laymen terms, they are the same gear. So if you are a baller on a budget, the AX version is the one to buy.;-) https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3809/...ccd8953a_o.jpg |

Re: Crawler Innovations "Big Blue" - 2.2 KOH Crawler; wraith based Although I am leaning towards not making the 5mm Transmission Outputs again (and I am currently sold out of them; so please do not ask), I still want to put the information out there. I'm using long front and rear trans outputs on Big Blue. The 14" wheel base basically requires it. I'm using 5mm outputs because the axles have 5mm pinions. The previous trans had 6mm outputs. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3810/...0527c9de_o.jpg The dimensions of the outputs are identical. It does not matter which direction the outputs stick out of the trans. The C.I. Long Front output design has: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7179/...fe48072f_o.jpg The C.I. Long Rear output design has: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7303/...006f1e7e_o.jpg Nice, Strong & all Steel; https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5209/...78f680e5_o.jpg All the gears inside the new VP Trans housing ready for grease and final assembly: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3753/...2ee080d3_o.jpg The BWD Motor Plate: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5263/...47d94179_o.jpg . |
Re: Crawler Innovations "Big Blue" - 2.2 KOH Crawler; wraith based I am going to try the ROC412 3100KV this time. The Pro4 3300KV was OK. It's biggest downfall to me is the 5mm pinion which limit you to 11 tooth pinion. The 412 has a standard 3mm shaft which makes gearing down even easier. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7162/...fc0a4868_o.jpg If it's electronic and going into a scaler, it must be dipped in: https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2818/...7f805d21_o.jpg Final Trans: https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2879/...bbcd907e_o.jpg https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2863/...59841fb5_o.jpg Motor w/ Trans 60T / 9T 32P Gearing https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3815/...caf290ea_o.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7228/...27bcab98_o.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7054/...01d23f20_o.jpg |
Re: Crawler Innovations "Big Blue" - 2.2 KOH Crawler; wraith based On to the axles next. Here is a picture of the previous front Axial HD OD gear Set. Both the ring and pinion were properly shimmed using Kyosho steel shims. If you look closely at the picture, you will see the teeth on the pinion are fine. It's only the ring gear that sustained damage. The AX30401 gear set has the worst gear mesh of the three gear sets available. It also has the worst gearing for a rock crawler @ 2.57. That gearing, coupled with poor gearing at the trans, coupled with 2S voltage = creates a lot of unnecessary issues. https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2934/...1e0d30aa_o.jpg |
Re: Crawler Innovations "Big Blue" - 2.2 KOH Crawler; wraith based This thread is pure crawler porn so far. Looking forward to more. |

Re: Crawler Innovations "Big Blue" - 2.2 KOH Crawler; wraith based When you waterproofed the motor, did you just dip the entire thing in that cup if corrosionX? Or did you remove things that can't be seen in the pic? |
Re: Crawler Innovations "Big Blue" - 2.2 KOH Crawler; wraith based this rig looks bad ass! i would make it like a scale rockbouncer with a 35t motor for a little speed but still able to crawl. put some TTC baja claws on it aswell and some currie axles by vanquish. |

Re: Crawler Innovations "Big Blue" - 2.2 KOH Crawler; wraith based this thing is insane. very acute attention to details |
I fell behind on updates. The rig is up and running again and headed to St Louis with me for the RECON G6. I'm going to post some random pics I took while finishing it. First up, when using aluminum axle housings with aluminum C's, they have a bad tendency to come loose. I have learned to use epoxy to keep the C's in place. Gasoline will break down the epoxy if they ever need to be removed. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/04/12/sy5umy6y.jpg Axles installed: http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/04/12/9ytese8y.jpg . ...Sent from the back seat while traveling to the St Louis G6... |

The DMG AR60 skids arrived in time and look great! http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/04/12/ume4emav.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/04/12/su3ygesa.jpg Ready for some competition action: http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/04/12/egymupa3.jpg ...Sent from the back seat while traveling to the St Louis G6... |
Just finished the day stage of the Recon G6 St Louis. Basically a two hour long course. I was lucky to finish. The hardened steel revo spur gear ate the 9tooth pinion that apparently wasn't hardened: http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/04/13/udysasym.jpg ...Sent from the RECON G6 in St Louis... |
Re: Crawler Innovations "Big Blue" - 2.2 KOH Crawler; wraith based wow...i would say you were lucky for sure! But a very nice job on the rig! how did you place so far? |
Re: Crawler Innovations "Big Blue" - 2.2 KOH Crawler; wraith based I just can't get over how awesome the chassis (as well as the rest of the RC) looks! It isn't too often you see a pinion gear strip out. Keep at it, Eddie! "thumbsup" |
Re: Crawler Innovations "Big Blue" - 2.2 KOH Crawler; wraith based lol, and here i was thinking that this drive line will be bullet proof. |
Re: Crawler Innovations "Big Blue" - 2.2 KOH Crawler; wraith based Nice rig Eddie! I will look for updates. |
Re: Crawler Innovations "Big Blue" - 2.2 KOH Crawler; wraith based Great looking rig Eddie! You incorporated some really well thought out parts. It's a bummer to hear that about your outputs though - those are my favorite and I run them on almost everything. |
Re: Crawler Innovations "Big Blue" - 2.2 KOH Crawler; wraith based Thank you for all the kinds words guys. "thumbsup" Update on this build: If you have ever been separated from your rc group, while in the woods at night, with nothing but the lights of your RC car to use, and you had to stop driving the rc car and carry it, to make sure you have enough battery to power the light to illuminate your hike back (this happened to me)... or Attended a RECON G6, forgot your personal head lamp, got separated once again from your RC group, and your trying to find course flags from 30 feet away in the dark using only your standard pathetic RC car lights (this also happened to me)... Then I highly recommend:mrgreen:: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3834/...262de40c_o.jpg I went ahead and bought (Yes I paid for them, I am not sponsored) four MORE light bars at the RECON G6 in Missouri. This was the second rig to receive new light bars. I had to reroute the existing leds and decide how to best install the new light bars. Although these light bars are spendy, as the saying goes... you get what you pay for and these MORE LED light bars are top quality. Wow what a difference! Especially over the old set up. I'm only running them on 9 volts! They can handle 12.6 volts  Couple pics out on the rocks with the bars installed but not turned on: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3707/...3c4ce23b_o.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5567/...8c2c197e_o.jpg Re-purposing of a Texas plate and re-purposing the two old headlights to now be rock lights: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3769/...2d6d607b_o.jpg The lights turned on: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3670/...a3a1e765_o.jpg One of the old roof lights was re-purposed as a motor compartment light: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3834/...2c49506b_o.jpg The other two roof light wires were attached to LED light tubes from hobby partz and run under the floor board between the skid: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5116/...d6573f4e_o.jpg |
