Question ring/pinion over engauging...

first of all i need to admit im a complete Ar60 newb. putting together my first axles

i did some searching and didnt come up with anything about this. just the bearing failures.

im having trouble with my pinion gear over engauging into the ring gear. i first thought i had a motor/esc issue, and started removing peice by piece to find the problem. finally when i had bare axles in my hand i found the problem.

if you push in on the pinion gear it will notchy/hard "spin" about 2 teeth, then completely lock up. wont spin, ease up, twist, and push in and it will spin another 2-3 teeth and then lock up again as you press in. does the same thing when on the truck and driveshafts hookuped up and powered by motor/trans.

every single part is brand new.

if you pull out on the pinion gear and spin it, it spins free and smooth.

does this with both Stock and HD UD/OD gears.

anyone else experienced this?

Ive seen this with the HD gears, just grease them, spin them with a drill for a bit and run them.

Also, make sure the inner pinion bearing is set all the way in, some take a good amount of pressure to seat all the way. This typically is the culprit

Since you say it only does it when you push in on the pinion the typical shimming between the outer pinion bearing and the yoke will cure it.

That's a fact. I've had good luck with traxxas teflon shims. Some of my gears need to shim the pinion in by putting the shims behind the head of the pinion and the inner bearing. Some need to go out by shimming between the driveline and the outer pinion bearing.

i thought about running a 5mm Thick outer pinion bearing instead of the stock 4mm thick.
instead of shims.
i dont have either so id have to order something anyway. i figure the bearing would be easier to not have to keep track of as im changing driveshafts etc.

anyone ever do this? thoughts?

teflon shim part #?

RCP Crawlers, Traxxas, they both make teflon shims, like Frank's Red Hot, I use the chit on everything!

TRA1985 Any hobby shop that stocks traxxas stuff should have them on the shelf.

Yes this, I had to put shims between the driveline and outer pinion also. It removed the slop and stopped the gears from meshing too tight. I used an associated sc10 rr hub bearing spacer. I had to cut to length and open the inner diameter. It was a little work to do but I have zero play with a good solid mesh. The stock bearing are holding up fine even on 3 cell and rock412 3100 KV motor
