You can run any combination of gears you want, if it's a trail rig you might want to only run overs in the front and stock ratio in the rear or under in the rear and stock ratio in the front.

Running over drive in the front / underdrive in the rear will make it turn sharper (front end is pulling it around) crawl better (pending weight distribution) and hill climb better. But there are many more variables to this... What are you using it for? Do you need over / underdrive? Is your drive train built appropriately to handle the extra stress? Etc.. Personally I run over / under drive in my wraith. Stock ratio up front, under drive in the rear. At a past meet I saw how much better it turned compared to other rigs, regardless of the tires and etc they ran. But, I'm also convinced that by doing this with speed runs it is how I sheered the front output shaft off of my AX2 transmission. (AX2 2 speed tranny's have a machined groove for a c-clip to hold a gear. This is a weak point, and the extra stress from the miss-matched gearing picked on it till it broke. Same thing will happen in an all wheel drive full size vehicle with mismatched gearing / tire sizes.) |

Over/under is when you run a higher ratio than stock in the front and a lower ratio than stock in the rear. Last edited by greenjk; 05-31-2014 at 07:10 PM.

Yep. stock ratio up front and UD ratio out back will work good.

I'm always running some combination of overdrive front. I might notice a slight improvement in crawling. |

So stock 38/13 front and 36/13 rear to get a over drive in front?

36/13 in the front, 38/13 in the rear to overdrive the front.

I run 38 in front and 43 in rear. The 36 has the poorest engagement of teeth...the 43 has the best....the 36 can and will fail before the others..especially under big brushless power

now by doing this what is the biggest benefit from over/under drive? from what i have seen on you tube it makes the front tires stay planted better to the surface is this true?

Being able to climb better, the front will pull the rig over an object rather than the rear pushing, causing flip backs

I would highly recommend stock/ud. If you live somewhere where you have serious natural rocky terrain, then go od/ud. Mine really binds on pavement. If I have to drive further than 50 feet on concrete/pavement, I pick my rig up it binds so bad.
