| New build need help with motor/esc and stuff.
I posted this in the "choosing a motor and esc" thread but since it's a sticky I guess it doesn't get noticed easily when there is a new post so I'm posting here so here it is.. Im a bit of a noob... well not a total noob but new to crawlers and today's advanced electronics, to explain I've had many RC cars in the past (20+ years ago) and am now just getting back into it so things have changed a lot! I currently have a Slash 4x4 Ultimate and have just finished building a Wraith Kit, but now need the electronics, I have the radio and receiver (Spektrum DX4S) and the servo (Hitec HS-7955TG). I want to avoid weeks of searching for a setup so I would like your suggestions on a total set up of the motor, ESC, and anything else I would need to build a reliable Wraith with very good crawling ability but better than stock speed (I have my Slash if I want to go fast), I know there are many different opinions on whats the best set up so I will begin with what I am leaning towards and what I will need to go with it and or suggestions on better combos. Below is what I'm leaning towards. And thanks for your input in advance! (P.S. I'm not too concerned with cost within reason) Motor: Tekin ROC412 3100kv ESC: MMP (any programming needed? Suggestions on them) BEC: CC (Do I need one? Amps?) Battery: 3s and 2s (Size mAh?) (I currently have 2 2s 4200mAh and 1 3s 5000mAh Traxxas Batteries) and plan on getting several more. Gearing: Suggestions? (everything currently stock, I'll upgrade to all metal gears once I have some ratios to try) Anything else? |

Just read Harley's thread. That's all that needs to happen or be said. If you don't find what you are looking for, read it again cause you missed it.

I am really liking my setup: ESC - MMP Motor - Hobbywing 4000kv 3656sd (They have a 3400kv) Batts - Either 2s 6000mah or 3s 3700mah Gearing - 13t pinion 56t spur 32 pitch gears Servo - Solar D772 BEC - YES! CC 10 amp |

You've made some good choices IMO. As for gearing, 32 pitch 56/12 is a good choice for your setup. As Billy D said read Harley's beginners guide multiple times. There's a wealth of good stuff there. Oh, as for batteries, 3S all the way! I use a SMC Racing 4300mah and depending how I drive it I get 2-3 hours out of one battery. Last edited by SteveC6R; 07-02-2014 at 02:16 AM.

Thanks folks, I did read Harley's thread (most of it) but it's a bit of information overload! I'll continue to read it through but think I should be good to order the ESC and Motor for now and get the rest after I finish reading.. One question I have is with the BEC, since the MMP has one built in why is there still a need to add an external BEC? built in one doesn't have enough amps? |

From what I understand YES you should still install the external BEC. Quote:

Still recommended to run an external bec if you are going to be running 3s packs to avoid glitching with your radio. Basically anything higher than 2s the internal bec has trouble keeping the power flowing especially with high powered servos. Sent from my iPad using my finger

I just upgrades my PS Wraith. HR trans gears -MMP-dont remember settings. can check that for you later -Tekin Gen2 17.5t (changed motor timing to 0*) -Yes BEC needed and don't forget to disconnect (red)power wire from esc. I run a solar D772 servo from Hobbypartz ($20) and set BEC to 7.4volts and I get 417oz. -3s lipos 4200mah 40c Thunder power/ 4000mah 20C Venom Current gearing 80/20 but switching to 32p 56/14 same ratio. I like the speed and crawls good but drag brake sucks even though its set a 213%. Ill upgrade the motor in time for 4s. Where do you crawl at Heckler? We usually do Genetech on Sundays around 10am. The only crawling I have done is at home in the yard with nothing really worth climbing, this is my first crawler, think I might buy a cord of firewood so I have something to crawl on.. LOL Where do you guys go at Genetech? In SSF? I had no idea there was anything over there and I've been working in that area for the last 15 years (I work in biotech) but I work in Redwood City now, I would love to meet up with you guys there once I get this thing finished.

Nice, got some bling huh? Here's a link South San Fran, Wed Night crawls Don't forget about your STAR. You get one for 30 posts I think? or pay $20 and get it now. It will allow you some advantages but the best one I think is the classified section. You can buy, sell and trade. I've gotten alot of good stuff their and prices are good. Also check out the Vendor section. |

A star for 30 posts??? Thunder power and venom batteries are crazy spendy. I'd take the same money and buy twice as many turnigy batteries for the same parts. I'm very broke. I'll take your stock parts off you. I'd swing for an RX8 esc. The mmp straps you into low powerd motors like the pro4's, it's only 65 amp esc. RX8 is 120 and will perform awesome and allow you to step into 1/8 scale motors running 6s if you ever have the urge. Mmp is a very good esc isn't to expensive and will control 800 watt motors and a wide variety of motors very well. Good luck and have fun with it. Last edited by evan03; 07-03-2014 at 04:58 PM. |

I noticed that you didn't mention anything about your cvd. I just bought my wraith and it has a holmes torque master 35t w/ a beck rev and I've snapped one drive shaft already and twisted two others. Make sure you upgrade your whole you're at it. I'm new to this as well |

Another noob here...I've just recently installed same motor/esc combo... here's what I did on my esc settings (if not mentioned it was left at the default * setting): Basic Tab Reverse type-Crawler Reverse Drag Brake- 30% Advanced Tab Start Power-Medium Motor Type-Sensored Only Cheat Mode-Disabled The Tekin motor comes with only the sensor wire...nothing else. You will need your own wire and bullet connectors. I used Castle 4mm. |

0 timing. Mmp is good and smaller 80 bucks buys alot of turnigy batteries. Maybe 4 or 6 depending on mah and voltage. Looking forward to seeing this come . Thunder powers good. Lots of he'll guys fly them |
