| Help with AX10 bomb proof transmmision.
Hi I'm looking for a little help. I'm currently in the process of building a AX10 bomb proof transmission for my Wraith and I can figure it out. I think I have everything I need and when I went to put the transmission together the gears inside will not turn freely. They bind and I get about half a turn then they lock. When I remove the idler gear shaft they seem to turn better. Please help. Thank you

All the bearings installed? New bearings or old? Seems odd...hopefully you figure it out.

Watch the way the main gear outputs turn. One way to check is chuck one end up in a cordless drill and it will show you if they are running true. If they are a little off it will cause binding. |

Does this half turn happen only when two case halfs are together? Have you tried turning with tranny case open.?

Correct. When the transmission case is open and apart the gears turn freely. When I close the transmission case the binding occurs and it will only do a half turn.

Crank I'm not sure I understand what you mean by changing the position of the outputs. Do you mean changing the to different holes on the gear?

Ok changed the hole positions but I'm still getting the same result. Yuck!

Yeah in the picture the top gear looks a little out but there is no shims. I essentially used the guts from my original wraith transmission and then added the Super Shafty 6mm outputs and Axial steel gears with a VP aluminum housing.

Try swapping in a plastic gear to one position at a time. There is a chance you could have gotten a gear that was not properly machined.

It almost seems the idler gear shaft if too long. When I remove it and put the housing together everything turns inside.

| Re: Help with AX10 bomb proof transmmision. That seems more like that when you remove it, it allows the gears to shift as needed to create an acceptable gear mesh. I highly doubt the shaft is too long.

Harley I agree with that and it make complete sense. I swapped the gears and something is still not right. I'm at the point where I want to just scrap this trany.

I had a similar problem with a bomb proof trans I got from another member. I had two problems that got it working. First of all the top gear wasn't seated all the way onto the pin in the supershafty top shaft. It was on the pin just not on all the way. Secondly, the lower outputs were bound up in the case. I pulled the bearings off the outputs and reset. Then flipped the output 180* and it spun freely finally. Dna |
