Default NEED HELP SPAWn

Okay last two days ive been having serious over heating issues.

Motor 1- 20t 3cell 56/12 gearing multiple runs couple puffs of smoke once i seen the smoke i swapped to 2cell 4200mah and no smoke
Motor 2- 27t 3cell 56/12 gearing one run in flames
Tires- heavy weighted front on 5.75 tall baja claws
BEC- Castle set at 6v
ESC- is a ae-5

Question is am i burning these motors up with to much voltage or what because this is getting very frustrating. As everyone knows the spawn is 32p gearing

My understanding
-up on spur down on pinion gearing down
-down on spur up on pinion gearing up

You're either too heavy, over geared or those tires are too tall, I'm thinking it's a little bit of all three. At 4.66:1 on the pinion/spur it's considered a little high and the taller tires are not helping. You need to try a smaller pinion and larger spur and with the 5.75" tires you should consider lowering the gears in your axles too (43/13 #AX30402). Taller tires generally means lowering your gear ratio, the stock Spawn has 5.5" OD tires and stepping up to 5.75 will require lowering the overall ratio.

Right now if you're running the stock 38/13 axle gears your FDR is 35.4:1. If it were mine I would drop 2 teeth on the pinion and change the axle gears to 43/13 and see how it runs, that would get you FDR down to 48:1. Just changing the axle gears would get you to 40:1 FDR, but I would try both for the 48:1. Then I would look for a 58 or 60 tooth spur if those didn't help enough.

Need a little more info to help here. What sort of conditions are you running in? Indoors, outdoors? Mud, snow, dry? Etc..

I'd also check for anything binding. The axles, drive shafts, etc should all spin freely. If something is binding it'll put a significant load on the motor and drive line. Does it hop when turning?

Without any more info, I'd say the motor / trans gearing seems fine. (56/12 ratio breaks down to a 4.67 : 1 ratio) However is anything else getting hot as well? Speed control, battery, wiring, etc..

Do you have any other spur and pinion gears available to test with at a higher ratio?

Yes the rear has the underdrive and hr locker. Ive got a 15t dynamite motor on the shelf but i think its gonna be too much. What about going up on the spur

Try grearing it to 6:1 with the tire and motor you have.

Going up on the spur would help, but the different gears in the axles will also add some stress to the motor. Seems like you've got several little things adding up to a lot of demand on the motor. A 15t won't make it any better, a 27t might or a 35t.

Try the 6:1 on your pinion and spur, that will give you an FDR of 45.5 up front and 51.6 in the rear.

And what motor the 20t seemed to last longer than the 27t by far. It had 8 smokes compared to a full flame out with the 27t

I was gonna change the gearing on my stock spawn to 32p 54/12 like in the harley thread but when i got it apart i noticed like everyone else its already got 32p 56/12. The pinion gear has a large set screw witch is nice but the spur gear looks different then most i think its because the slipper set-up. Does anyone know of a brand of spur gear that works for sure.

Im gonna be taking my for her maiden voyage tomorrow morning. Running stock with batt upfront ill be using a 3300 2s traxxas and 5500 3s dynamite. Hopefully the electronics make it. Ive never had problems with axial motors in my scx10.

Yeah, 60/10 if you can find a spur that fits or 54/9 would be the same 6:1. Not sure if anyone makes spur gears for the Spawn with the new slipper.

And that's a nice smoke cloud surrounding your Spawn, since you've smoked a 27 you may want to look into something lower.

Once that motor smokes once, it's done. Once it has started smoking you've waiting too long. You need to monitor your motor temps more often until you get your setup right.

Gear it down and get that weight out of the wheels to start with. That rolling mass is going to suck up power. Get the weight low, but where it doesn't have to be spun by the motor.

agreed, get the weight out of the wheels, get the ratio between 5:1 and 6:1... I would start with a 10t pinion on the 56t spur...if the 20 turn and 27 turn motors were stock axial motor then they were not very good to begin with...

How tight is your gear mesh?

When you take out your motor out spin the spur with your hand make sure its free to turn.

I just greased everything in the Trans Friday and put metal gears in as I did that.

How tight did you go on the 3 2.5mm screws in the back of the trans? I snugged then up the first time I did it and locked up the whole assembly.

Something sounds like it's binding, while your gearing isn't ideal, it's pretty common.

if you insist on weighting it down, you need unsprung weight, knuckle weights, beef tubes in the axles, etc.... keep the weight low down...

my rigs are not weighted down except for beef tubes and they are anywhere from 7.2 lbs to 10.4 lbs.

They perform very well and I dont see the need to make them any heavier than they already are, but thats just my close minded opinion
