Default The help me build a Wraith thread

So I have aquired a new to me Wraith Frame and body. Thats its. So I will be building one from the ground up. Lets not worry about electronics just yet, lets start with the basics. Things I know I want 2.2 and a shitton of power (brushless for sure). Also want it to perform decent and be pretty damn near indestructible.

Lets start by taking recommendations on axles and axle parts. Shocks, and finally links.

Caviate I don't have an unlimited budget and don't want to have 1000s of dollars tied up in this thing.

Seems like if you have the time, you can find decently upgraded (or at least solid) axles here in the classified section. And the price will be right. Enough people headed toward aluminum axles to make them fairly plentiful. Maybe upgrade the locker of need be, and some uni's.

I haven't used the Gmade shocks on the wraith yet (build in progress) but they have been good for the money on the Yeti. Traxxas makes an 8 for $60 pack that people seem to dig.

Cool info. I definitely have the time. I have a scx10 to keep me occupied while I build the wraith. Sounds like g made may be money for the shocks. Would be nice to have spares as well.

The wraith I'm building has definitely benefited from the classifieds here. I just wait until a great deal pops up - and it usually doesn't take long.

Some parts are worth getting new if you know you're going to really be rough on it (HD gears, etc). But if you play your cards right you may be able to get some coupons working and combine shipping from a single vendor.

Read the sticky's at the top of the forum and it covers every area of the truck and what upgrades are suggested and when.

I have, but I'm not really upgrading anything since I don't have anything to work with. My plan is to build it into something sweet from the get go.

What parts do you consider getting new? I know you said gears, are you talking tranny gears or axle gears? Or both?

I got the metal tranny & spur gears new. I haven't gone to the upgraded axle gears yet, but it seems like an obvious move for the upgrades I've done already. I'm doing my best to follow the weakest link down the line to see what I would break next, after putting sturdier parts on

I also splurged on the VP knuckles/c-hubs new because I wanted a particular color and they hadn't turned up in the classified for quite awhile. But I knew I wanted these because my buddies and I have broken the plastic versions too easily in the cold we run in up here in Vermont (5 degrees f today).

Some HD gears just sold in the classifieds. Did you snag 'em?

Another product I forgot to mention that I snagged from a vendor was the DMG diff sliders. Good way to protect the bottom of the axle once you get them buttoned up. I was going to fab my own, but I felt they were reasonably priced and designed well. Like to contribute to the rccrawler vendors when I can...

I agree that I think knuckles and hubs will have to be aluminum

If you want something 'sweet' that's going to handle your 'shitton of power' and you don't have anything to work with, you should follow this manual for how to handle it.
Harley's Guide to a Bulletproof Wraith
All the part#'s are there, there's everything you will need for a build like this. So you can't afford vanquish, look at hot racing or blue monkey. It's pretty straightforward.

Post #3 and 4 should explain some more.
