Default Crazy idea?

I was doing some thinking, has anyone ever thought of using and adapting a power drills 2 speed clutch to work in a crawler as 2 speed tranny? Never had one apart so I'm not sure how bulky it might be. Anyone ever ponder or seen someone attempt it?

Generally the two speed gear box in a power drill is bolted directly to the motor, about the same diameter and ranging in length from about 3/4 to more than the length of a standard 550.

do you know how it shifts?
Looks like a mount could be made to bolt it under the hood and run it to a transfer case.

Would be a project for sure. Not only mount but gearing it right too. The low end would be torqy as hell though. Lol

I'm not sure what the speed of a power drill motor normally is, but I'm guessing the 2 speedy would almost be too slow. But maybe the drill motors are just slow. It's not the craziest idea I've ever heard for sure.

You also need to purchase a transfer case since it only has one output.

They usually shift with an external lever moving a ring gear over two sets of planetary drive gears. If I'm not mistaken ring gears "A" and "B" seen below are stationary, locked to the drive block. Of course most drills, even in high gear and single speed drills, are already geared low.

I think the one I posted above is actually a single speed. A little harder to find a picture of a disassembled 2-speed box or a diagram of one than I thought it would be, but I managed to locate this one. It's typical of what I've found digging through my fair share of drills with stripped gears and burnt up motors.

Drill motors should work well. The 'go to' for the Traxxas Summit when the Stock motor fails is from Dewalt Drills. Some nutter run dual drill motors.

Yeah, was more looking at the 2 speed trans. Rather then the motor

Hrm.. I've got a Honda drill with a 2 speed trans that I can take apart. Cheaper to buy another drill than it is batteries.

Love these forums, but you guys are inspiring me to start too many projects at once.

Look up battle bots.. or just cordless drill motor/trans. Lots of info.
2sp trans are bulky.

Believe it or not the Harbor Freight drills are the best as they have steel gears and easier to mount.

Also you would need to lock the clutch
They make mounts for the single speeds like mine here. The output shaft needs to be modified.

Whelp, picked this up for cheap at the 'ol goodwill. All metal gears! Will take it apart today and see what I can rig up. Good news is I am needing a replacement Chuck for my drill. So bonus!
