| 32p gear question
S o I got a 32p spur and pinion, but I also ordered a set of HD gears for the trans I did not think about the 32p. Am I correct in that I will need to find 32p trans gears? I haven't seen any in my looking around, if someone could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.

The 48 pitch HD transmission gears are fine.

Why would 48 Pitch gears be a problem? I would think that you would get more contact area from 48 Pitch gears. I know 32p have a bigger bite but you get less teeth that are biting so to speak.

It's gearing 101, larger teeth are simply stronger. The 48 pitch teeth are about half the height of 32, and since (one or both) gears are round you have about two teeth from each (drive/driven, pinion/spur) engaged at the same time. If you have much more than that engaged you get gears than bind. You don't get more teeth in the mesh with 48, or MOD 0.5 or 64, you actually get less because the teeth are smaller. This is why 48 pitch strip easier. The reason our internal transmission gears last a little longer than the spur is because they're about twice the width and there's less deflection in the transmission. So the gears stay closer together a little better. |

That makes sense to me. Thanks for clearing that up for me. Always like learning something new! So would you say that hardened steel gears are a lifetime replacement for the most part or will they too eventually need to be replaced?

The HD gears will eventually wear out like the plastic, but it will take much longer and you're less likely to randomly break teeth off them. They're certainly a durability and longevity upgrade.

1:! gears are the same way, even staying the same pitch. lower (numerically higher) gear ratios are inherently weaker. I.E. a 4.56 ratio is weaker than a 3.08. That's why for more common rear ends, like the Ford 9" they make weird ratios, like 4.57. 4.56 = 41/9 teeth 4.57 = 32/7 teeth the 4.57 is stronger, because each individual tooth is larger. | |
