Default Is the one steel gear in the trans OK?

I want to change out the two stock plastic gears in the transmission with metal ones, but the Hot Racing set of three metal gears is sold out from many places and RPP Hobby says about three weeks to get new stock. I can get the RR metal ones, but only the bottom gear and idler gear which would mean using the stock metal gear from Axial. So I guess my question is, should I wait for new stock on the Hot Racing gear set, or just go with the two from RR and keep the stock Axial one?

Has any one had problems with the stock Axial metal gear in the transmission?

Stock top gear is good to go

I've broken 2 RRP lower gears, still on the Axial top gear.

Wait for the HR tranny gearset, run the stock Axial parts for now. My original AX10 kit with weighted 2.2s and 45 turn lathe motor never stripped the tranny gears, but I replace them all during builds now just in case. FYI, there's the regular and the lightweight HRsteel gearsets. I've had no problems with either set.

It depends on how much power you are running. The stock top gear isn't bulletproof but will last a while under moderate power levels. I ended up trashing one in a heavy rig with lots of pro4 power. The HR 3 gear set has been great for me.

Thanks for all the advice guys...

I'm using a HH Trailmaster with 3S, but mostly find myself crawling and trail running, so no real bashing. Guess running it like that, the top gear should be good for some time.

Either the hot racing gears or the Axial aftermarket ones are good choices. If you don't drive too recklessly the plastic gears will last quite a long time.

I am running that gear stock still with the plastic ones upgraded to steel. No problems here, and I beat it pretty hard, low speed though.
