crawlmaster 13t and 56/12 gear

crawlmaster 13t expert and gears
I see the note that you do not recommend the HH crawlmaster 13t with 52/12 gears and recommend the 52/10 setup to prevent problems. Is this still currently a problem Or something that's been worked over the past 4 years? What are the details of the problems that occur then if you know. I just installed this motor, bec, and hitec 7950 and wanted to make sure not to smoke something right off the back.

its due to the gearing causing an overloading of the motor, depending on your terrain, you can burn it up crawling aggressively in the rocks. just run a 10t pinion against the 56t spur for a 5.60:1 ratio. thats what I have and it works fine. you can try the setup you have but no promises you wont smoke it.

56/12 is too tall. HH are great motors but the tallest you should run is 5:1. I would go 56/9 and check motor temperature. Other things to factor are your diff gears, rig weight, tire diameter etc.

Running a 57/11....tried 12 and it went to 160 deg at the end bell....just a tad too warm for me.

I find the 5:1 pinion to spur works well with ALL HH motors...not just this particular one

Where can I find a good 10t pinion then. Seeming to not be on main sites with decent description. most I find won't clarify if it's a 3mm or anything besides 32p 10T. Robinson racing was all I really found

I'm running 56/13 13t. Light crawling and mostly hill climbs and trail riding. Motor and gearing does great for me!

Hot Racing has pinions in 3mm

Most that don't say are 3mm. Unless noted as 5mm.

Most Traxxas pinions work, and almost everywhere has Traxxas pinions. They say mod 1, but they work

Re: crawlmaster 13t and 56/12 gear

I run the Super Shafty upper and a Traxxas Slash 2wd clutch. Then run the Traxxas mod 1 plastic spur.
Its not as loud as steel. And I can swap out spurs unlike the RRP clutch.
And run Traxxas pinions. And search on ebay shows you can get 32p/mod 1 pinions down to 9t and 3mm bore.

Mod 0.8 is close to 32p

Mod 1 is too big.

Re: crawlmaster 13t and 56/12 gear

Well that might explain why I had smoke yesterday. I wasn't running it at the time, a friend was. I had a 15t traxxas pinion on the stock spawn motor. It didn't kill it but I'm sure it's now not long for this world. I swapped in the 12t stock pinion and went on a hour long walk. Mixed terrain, some crawling, some low speed walking and some speed runs on the beach. No issues but the motor was quite warm.

Looks like the 15t isn't friendly and now I'm looking for a new motor. It sucks because I was quite happy with the speed and it still crawled well but not if the motor is smoking. I'd love a HH but I might stop by the LHS and pick up a replacement sealed endbell in case it dies. With easter coming up it will be getting a lot of abuse and I want a backup.
