It's open*source and can be down loaded safely and freely*here... librecad.org There are packages for all decent platforms.....(and windows too). Last edited by drzoo2; 04-10-2015 at 05:08 PM. |

My aluminum diff covers get stuck on everything, I can't even imagine using one of those. The diff is literally the lowest point on the car, why would you want it to be even lower? |

The plastic housings work really well, but eventually it will wear a hole in either the cover, or the edge around the cover. I'd stay away from aluminum skids. The aluminum gouges easily and becomes abrasive, catching on even the smoothest surfaces. Could make some out of steel fairly easily, but it'll still be a hang up point considering it's location. If your not against buying a set go with DMG, theirs are really nice and very strong. That third bend on the diagram is a concern. The metal would need to be longer, with perhaps a gentle curve after the bend else the lip will catch and hang it up more than the stock housing ever would. |

Good point. A smoother round curve would be more ideal.

I do more bashing than crawling, although I do do the occasional crawling with my buddies. They would not be that hard to remove if they started catching a lot. I just want a little extra protection for the pumpkin. Thanks for the file I will have to add a bit to it cause I want the back portion to extend up the cover and bolt to the housing with the bolts that hold the diff cover on. But that is a great starting point! Thanks alot!

Please, feel free to mod it to your liking. It's why I uploaded the dxf... I agree with others that there is some potential to hang, specially on small branches and such. Most of the rock in my area are smooth and round. These were more of a rev 1. If you make changes I'd love to see it. |

Why not just stick with the stock housing and no skid? they are cheap to replace...

I like the look of skids for one. For two I dont want to have to replace the housing unless I am replacing it with a nice aluminum one VP or some other brand. Once I finally do upgrade to metal housing I will be putting skids on them anyway I don't want to tear up the pumpkin of expensive housing.

Those skids posted in your first post are terrible. I had them, didn't take long for the weak aluminum to break and it was constaly bending and rubbing the drive shaft. Unless you're going to make it steel than I wouldn't bother with that design.

i made a diff skid out of .080 kydex and it holds up great to abuse and slides over rocks just about as easy as the housing itself. plus a 12x12 sheet of .080 is about $7 and it only takes a 1x3 inch piece to make a diff skid.
