My first attempt at an Ultra4 rig.

I've only been in a the hobby a few months and I've been learning a lot from watching videos of actual 1:1 rigs in action.

I really love the rebel offroad king of the hammers rig and I'm drawing my inspiration from that. I'm trying to do all the work myself. And it's still a work in progress. Need to finish the body panels, battery tray, light bar and winch mounts, spare tire holder, and a sheet metal interior.with metal fuel cell. I'm doing all the welding, body work and powdercoating. Will be going with the same color scheme.

This is my inspiration

This is what I have so far, running a wraith chassis, wraith links and 1.9s to keep it scale looking. All metal tranny.

Thinking about going with scx10 axles and spacers, the wraith axles look a little too wide.

The rear shock mounts were a pain in the butt to weld

The flex shot.

Everything was mig welded made with 3\16 rod.

Will post updates as I keep working on it.

Thanks for the compliments, I definitely need a tig welder now. The torch can go places where my mig gun cant. Plus it looks way better. I've had my mig for for 12 years now. I'm still keeping it for bigger projects.

This is what it looked like with. 2.2s, it just didn't look scale.

Now I have to start saving up for king shocks, currie axles and 1.9 beadlocks.

Awesome job. You have some talent there. Any updates

Re: My first attempt at an Ultra4 rig.

I have been busy building wraith and yeti parts for people on craigslist, and picked up an scx10 that's been eating up most of my time.

But I will definitely try to finish it up soon. Just need to add small details like body tabs, lightbar mounts, rear spare tire carrier, side rock slider and plates. And mounts to add all the scale accessories. I want to be sure it all lines up before I powder coat it.

Finally got some free time and went ahead and built the spare tire holder, and rock sliders.

Still need to weld a plate and nut to secure the spare tire. Going to rework the front shock mounts, I don't like the angle I welded them on. They stick out too much.

Still debating weather to use the yeti driver lexan peice or to do a full sheet metal interior.
Depends on how much room I have after I fab a shorty hardback battery tray and esc mount.

Re: My first attempt at an Ultra4 rig.

Had some free time today and I fabricated some body panels. Out of aluminum and welded up some body tabs. Still trying to see where I want to mount everything so I can wire it up accordingly. The tabs are a pain in the ass because I have to drill and cut each one individually. So far it's looking good. I'm having trouble fitting an rc4wd warn winch in the front, it's just too tall.

Probably another week of fab time, and another week, stripping it down, sandblasting it and powdercoating each part.

It's just your run of the mill chinese Saturday night special. (Ebay). I ordered clear aluminum they sent me anodized black. I brought it to their attention, they gave me a partial refund. I was going to sand blast it regardless.

Also modded the king shocks, replaced the bottom king shock o-rings with an AE sc10 o-ring and used 50wt oil. It makes a world of difference.

Going to go with a turnigy 4.2 short hardcase. Up behind the radiator. She's already pig heavy as it is to put a full size one.

Finished welding up all the brackets and the battery tray. Also welded up the mounts for the slider plate. Made some side view mirror mounts. And sand blasted and Powdercoated the chassis. The body panels are sandblasted and will.be powdercoated satin black along with the axles. The links will be orange.

Hopefully my 8 year old finished the graphics for me. He's a wiz at making logos and stuff.

Re: My first attempt at an Ultra4 rig.

I finished powdercoating the suspension and steering linkage today. Also powdercoated the aluminum axles and body panels matte black. Also finished cutting out the rock slider skid plates. I'm about 90% done. Just need to wire it up tonight at work. I think I'm going to go with the wraith interior it looks like it fits.

That's some damn fine work you do. Really nice rig you've built there. I must admit, I'm surprised at how good 1.9s look on AR60s.

Re: My first attempt at an Ultra4 rig.

Looks bad ass with the orange cage and black panels!!
I too always thought the AR60 was too large.
I have reduced mine to XR10 width on my rock bouncer (removed about 0.75") and I like it much better, mounted on big 2.2s
For 1.9s, I would remove 1" to 1.25"

You fellas on here amaze me. Freakin love it!

I want to get started on modifying mine but I feel like there is so much to be learned. I start thinking about "ok where do I start", then I start thinking about all things that I know I need to know but don't know and it messes with my mind man lol.

Craftsman.

Haha true story! I'm on my first build and there's just so much I want to do and so much info on here it's mind boggling.

Just start building. Oh and tack weld everything, you are going to mess up a lot.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psdann02z8.jpg

Its pretty much done, went with the yeti lexan drivers. The stock wraith interior didn't fit too good. I waiting on a local shop to print me some decals this week. I'm going to build my own links to shorten the wheel base. And I'm going to have a hell of a good time shortening the aluminum axles about .5in on each side.

I put it through some testing and it actually handles really well. I love that it weighs a ton. The weight actually keeps it from tipping over. It makes the suspension do all the work and keeps the tires planted on the rocks. Only thing is the foams suck. I need to make my own or get some real stiff foam to keep the tires from flattening out. Or flexing laterally.

Once I get those bugs fixed it's on to a full tube chassis southern rock bouncer.
