Default Axial Wraith Question

Hi, just getting into rc and bought a used axial wraith from a local guy. The wraiths completely stock electronically and he gave me a 7 volt 2000 mah NIMH battery. My question is would that battery cause low torque and what I believe to be cogging when trying to crawl? Or should I look into other areas of the wraith. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

who knows, with no information and no other batteries to try there is no way to tell. Most of us run LIpo batteries and have moved away from Ni batteries. I sure noticed a huge difference with a 2 and 3s lipo vs my old Ni pack, but the pack could have been really old. You will have to troubleshoot this issue, thats what this hobby is all about. Wrenching on your rig and figuring out whats wrong, they are all different.

That battery probably combined with the stock 20t motor and gearing isn't helping.

I agree with Hans - the Wraith stock motor and gearing is not great for crawling. There are several fixes, if that is indeed the problem but you need to decide how much cash you want to 'invest' in it.

Since this is a used rig I think you should take an inventory of everything you've got in the electronics, drivetrain and steering. Inspect and research each major component - check out the manufacturers websites and google the part number. It's all about learning about your rig and you need to know what you're starting with before throwing upgrades at it. If you get stuck on something post it here, someone can usually help.

Thanks for replies, he did mention that the pack was pretty old and had never been used. I plan on getting lipos but was trying to get an idea of other things I might need to order to get it moving correctly. As of now I get about 10 minutes run time out of it with about 5mph top speed and can't even spin tires in dirt

Go lipo for sure. nimh is a waste of time for what you want to do with the wraith. Onyx makes reliable lipos, I have good luck with those.

Good choice. That stock esc will handle any 2s lipo. Now it sounds like you gotta tighten up the nut behind the wheel. Welcome to the hobby.

This means you either set up the spur gear too tight or too loose

Makes me hesitant to get a used rig as my first. Sounds like a tear down would be a good idea when buying a used rig.
