How to change out gears on diffs.???

So I ordered my new HD front and rear differential gears I'm going with standard drive up front and underdrive in the rear. The gears should be here by tomorrow, but I have never done something like this before. Is there any tricks or hidden things that I should be aware of on how to do the swapping of the gears on the differentials? I just don't want to mess it up! Is there a video or something anywhere that I can check out, or even perhaps a really good thread on how to do this very thing swapping the gears in the differentials?

Just remember which side the gear is so you put the new ones in the same way.

And shim the pinions. Tamiya has a nice 5mm shim assortment. Crucial step.

putting the shims on the inside of the axle on the pinion shaft in an effort to increase mesh between the pinion/ring gears? right? sounds like a good idea ill have to do that on my wraith.

Outside of the housing. Between the bearing and the drive shaft. When the pinion moves in it forces sideways against the bearings. The inner pinion bearing will fail.

Stack up the shims until you can just get the pin in. The pinion should be solid in all directions.

Not sure why i interpreted it that way, thanks for the clarification! I was about to switch my shims from the outside of the axle housing to the inside. I guess ill just be leaving them where they are then!

Haha! I knew someone was going to bust my chops! I already had googled it and watched stuff, but I don't always trust what I see simply from, "nobody's" on the Google! ; ) ha! So I thought I would ask the guys on here that I know, know what they are talking about!

If you've ever built a kit before, it's easy. Just make sure you grease everything, before you close everything up.

Are you using the stock Axial lockers? If so...consider ordering some better ones. Grip Fab, Vanquish, Locked Up RC (my personal fav) to name a few. And when you install those, make sure to use Blue Loc-Tite on the screws. Wouldn't bother with Loc-Tite on the stock plastic locker housings.

Haha, I just spent the last two nights trying to figure out why the new gears I got for my ax10 axles were grinding when even the slightest pressure was being applied. After digging around my spare parts box I found a bunch what I thought were misplaced spacers. I put one outside the housing between the bearing and shaft...was so proud of myself lol... after reading this I now realize they are shims, and I did the right thing! Didn't need shims for my wraith, though.
