| slowing down the wraith questions
I just got my first crawler, the Axial Wraith. I find that it's not geared low enough. I only use less than 1//8th throttle. I'm not really into tons of wheel spin. i'm running 2S and everything is stock. Should I go ahead and change the gear ratio? Should I also get a higher turn motor? If I change the gear ratio will it still fit in the tranny housing? I'd like to have a slower and more controlled decent speed. Do you think it's possible to fit this body on the wraith? Tamiya - Rc Body Set Mercedes Unimog - 51358 Maybe I should forget all this and trade for a more scale type rig? I just want to go real slow and have it look scale. The local hobby shop had the Wraith and I kind of impulse bought it because I wanted to trying crawling so bad. Thanks |

If you want a slower decent speed, set up the drag brake in the ESC or get an esc that has a drag brake. I recommend the Holmes or Castle ESCs. For gearing, a larger spur gear probably won't fit in the stock cover. You can find a smaller pinion try Robinson racing.

you can make anything fit read Harleys guide Harley's Guide to a Bulletproof Wraith it is spot on for a newb if you start to understand you can the fine tune to what you want unlimited wraith budget this is mine and it crawls as good as a goat super low speed control faster then it needs to be mmp esc,rok412,and 3s all at 13pds |

I didn't say you couldn't make it fit, I said it probably wouldn't fit Inside the cover....

I believe I have seen that body on some wraiths you just need the wheel opening front to rear at around 12" apart and you should be able to get it to fit. if your just wanting to crawl with your rig I recommend you change your spur and pinion to the 32p gears for a stronger gear setup. 60 tooth in the 32p is the largest you can run to keep the spur gear cover. For crawling only would stay with the brushed motors, they give more control of the drag brake on downhill.

For the speed part of the question read this thread: Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith - Gearing Added! A couple of options other than hacking the body to fit the Wraith Cage: 1) Get a SCX10 chassis and use the axles and transmission from the Wraith. 2) Get a SCX10 Deadboltand change the link length to fit the Unimog. Then sell or keep the Wraith, I would keep the Wraith and have both. |

I'd be removing the 20T junk motor that comes stock & change out to a re-buildable 30 or 35T HOLMES HOBBIES TORQUE MASTER EXPERT MOTOR (30T) Nicer slow speed control, more torque, better drag brake. That is unless you insist on running in mud & slop, that stuff kills motors, just get cheap silver can. Personally I can't see how you'll fit the Tamiya Unimog cab to a wraith, they're quite small compared to even an SCX10 but I've seen that done. Not to mention all that Wraith cage & cockpit will look a bit odd out the rear of the Unimog cab. Heres that same cab on an SCX10, just note that the Wraith is 2" longer in the wheelbase & has tires nearly 1" bigger. It's not that it can't be done, but it won't be a "drop on" conversion, there'll be some invention & fabrication involved. |

Robinson Racing makes a 9 and 10 tooth 32p pinion. I changed my sons to the 10t to slow it down some.

Want to ask for opinions on this setup. 58t spur gear with a 9t pinion gear and a 45T brushed motor. Would that be slowing it down to much?

35t integy motor, 56 or 58 tooth 32p spur, like a 12 or 14t pinion, 3s. Pretty quick but crawls well too, may gear it down some just so its not so jumpy.

Good thread, I have a 55 turn motor, was thinking of a 87tooth spur and 12 tooth pinion since I don't have an 11 tooth pinion. any thoughts to this? I want really slow and better crawling, I just smoked a cheap 35 turn RC4WD motor. The gearing I'm using is 48 pitch.
