Smoked my motor...

Hey guys. I have a poison spyder rtr wraith and smoked my stock motor this weekend. I was reading Harley's post about motors and esc and I was just curious if the Holmes torquemaster 35t was still a good option. (Post was last edited in 2012). I have about a $75 budget and I like to crawl and run some trails. I don't care about speed. Just smooth crawling and a little wheel speed for hills. Opinions?

CrawlMaster Expert 540 - CrawlMaster Series - Brushed Motors - Motors
TorqueMaster Expert 540 - TorqueMaster Series - Brushed Motors - Motors

Under 50.00 I'd buy either 16t or 30t motor. Be sure to read gearing suggestions from Holmes Hobbies.
Recommended gearing for Axial Wraith
General Trail use: 30t TorqueMaster 540 or 13t CrawlMaster 540
(the 13t TorqueMaster 540 is not suitable for the Axial Wraith)
Puller Pro BL 540 Stubby or Standard
TrailMaster Pro BL 540
5.6:1 pinion to spur ratio (or even lower gearing) advised to prevent overheating for brushed motors. Example: 15 or 14 tooth pinion and 84 tooth spur.
Stock gearing compatible with brushless motors.
Motor Recommendations

Or spend a little more and get the pro version they are worth the extra money.

Re: Smoked my motor...

I run the TorqueMaster Expert 35T motors in both my SCX-10 and Wraith.
and I have no regret making those purchases.

Like them plenty.
Very smooth and linear both at start up, as well, all the way to their top end.
Both my rigs utilize the HH's BR/XL ESC(s) using 3S LiPo batteries.
So maybe that ESC/Motor combo is what makes them work even better !?

If yer a racer or go fast basher... a 30T - 27T could offer more rpm.
But don't confuse high speed RPM with torque and wheel spin.

If money is of no consideration... go with the hand wound Pro on either motor choice.

Both the Exp./Pro can be rebuilt.

For trail running and crawling mixed... the 35T TM is a good choice IMO.

Re: Smoked my motor...

Thanks for the suggestions! I still don't understand the turn counts and their advantages/disadvantages. It seems it would be more
beneficial to get the highest turn count for more torque and a slower crawling speed, which clearly isn't always the case, but I don't fully understand it. I'm running 2s lipos currently by the way, and when we go out, it's usually for a couple hours with few breaks in driving, if that makes any difference. Also, as I only have enough to spend on a motor at the moment, will it hurt to run any of these motors with the stock esc for now? I'm completely new to crawlers and electronics.

pop in a 35t hh motor and run the stock esc for now....no worries... i still do that way

Re: Smoked my motor...

generally the more turns = higher torque.
generally the fewer turns = higher RPM

There will always be a trade off when choosing.

If ya just want high torque and no tire spin...
get a 55T motor.

But if ya want a little of both...
then go with a 35T.

Because yer running a 2s... I'd say start with the 35T
as that's about middle road.

my experience using 2s found a 55T to be slow and boring...
Smooth and linear but with no real world tire spin attainable.
I wouldn't run a 55T without 3s voltage run thru.

Wheel spin is not something high turn motors offer much of.

Do not confused wheel spin with wheel speed (RPM).
Low speed wheel spin is advantageous and is a mix of RPM/Torque.

Google RPM Vs. Torque so you understand their different values
and what those differences can offer.

RPM is more often associated with WFO racers/street racers...
Whereas having torque is more associated with crawling.

But remember... that RPM/Torque always have a trade off...
and you can never attain the best of both worlds.

You can only hope to find the middle road that suits your needs.

I say lose that 2s for 3s voltage ;-)

But remember... if ya volt up... you'll likely need to gear down.

^ the higher voltage means more power (Torque/RPM).

Re: Smoked my motor...

Thanks! I understand now. I had just never had it explained and was only picking up on terminology I'd read around haha. If I plan to run my 2s for now and upgrade to 3s later on, would the 35t still be a good choice? I don't like doing things twice :lmao:
I had also switched to 84/16 gearing as Harley had suggested in his post if that makes a difference also.

I can't speak for every 35T motor...

But 3s is all I run with my HH TM 35T motors.
And I think they hold up quite well to that voltage.

Just be sure your ESC is up to that higher voltage use.

^ 5.25
I generally run an 87/14 ( 6.21 ) and occasionally a 16 (5.44 ) for more top end.
But it's 'cuz I'm runnin' 3S

3s = volt up / gear down

Re: Smoked my motor...

Also the lower turn crawlmaster motors i think are 5 slator motors vs 3 slator motors, therefore the 13t crawlmaster lower turn count will 'in the real world' run like a 27t torquemaster. John has more info on this that me ofcourse. Torquemaster for more trailing, crawl for crawling. I have a 27 torquemaster pro, and I love it, wonderful low end with ok top end. The motor is quite different than my puller pro stubby brushless set up.

I got my motor in the mail today. Being my first one to purchase I didn't realize they came without leads. I assume I'm expected to make my own? What gauge wire would I need? Anything special I should know?

Use the ones from the motor you are replacing.

Re: Smoked my motor...

^ this

just be sure they are a match to the ESC's bullet motor connectors

If the bullet connectors don't match they might not hold very well
and could short out causing futher problems.
Mix matching bullet connectors is not a good idea IMO

Because I utilize a HH's BR/XL ESC
I purchased the HH's bullet connectors (leads) for my HH's motor.

I assume I'll just solder them to the paddles on the new motor?
