Wraith shock recommendations
 

Alright so I have recently bought some gmade piggyback shocks for my wraith and I'm loving them! Now that I have bought some shocks my friend who also has a wraith is looking for some shocks. He wants at least 110mm and I was wondering if I could get some input on some good shocks that won't break the bank.

I have the Gmade 103mm XD piggybacks on my wraith,and I think they're a big improvement over the stock ones. Some on here run the Traxxas big bore shocks and say they are great. But with any shock set you have,you may have to tune with different spring rates depending on what your ride weighs and what you want to do with it (Rock crawler,Basher,etc.) I myself have not changed the springs that came on my Gmade's and it flexes well and has plenty of droop for what I put it through,but I don't compete with it and I don't use it strictly for a rock crawler. As with not breaking the bank for the shock upgrade,there are plenty of options out there and if he is on a budget I think the Gmade shocks are a pretty good choice.

I like mine a little shorter. I've got 93mm Yeti fronts with Axial black 1.04# Wraith springs. The spring rate is a little more than 1.04 since its slightly compressed even with the cup spun to the top.

I use the Traxxas 4962 alloy big bores = 100 mm eye - eye

Best quality alloy shock out there for the coin... IMO

I purchased the 4962 T-Maxx shock kit (8 total).
Then installed a set of 4 on each my SCX-10 and Wraith.

The SCX-10 uses the unaltered 100 mm shock length.
Whereas the Wraith has longer lower ball ends lengthening those to about 104 mm over-all.
^ (doesn't alter the shock's stroke length)

The Traxxas BB's can be purchased in pairs TRA 2662
But those do not include any coil springs and will need be purchased separately.

110 mm seems a bit excessive...
unless the upper shock's eye mount positioning were raised in compensation.

'cuz without making shock mounting adjustment/relocation...
the suspension will be raised slightly and the COG will suffer.
This can also effect your drive shaft - axle pinion output angle(s).

I noticed the TRA BB's compress more then did the original Wraith shocks.
And so more compression (up travel) is attained by utilizing the BB's.
So either the upper eye mounting locations may need to lowered a tad...
Or in my case... I installed an O-ring spacer on the shock's external shaft
so as to limit that compression some.
^ ( yes, this will reduce the shock's stroke length slightly )

But I needed to because my Wraith was altered to become a 1/6 scale Jeep bodied crawler...
that has fenders that limit the suspension's up travel/ tire clearance.
And either I live with tire rub... or lower the upper shock eye mount.
So as not to raise the chassis COG... I chose the stroke limitation instead.


An open wheel well wrath would not be affected...
and would net more compression or up travel just by installing these.

Another fan of the Traxxas shocks. I just use the cheap and plentiful Ultra shocks. :)

I run the G-Made 103MM Piggy backs as well. I enjoy the ability to adjust them on the fly. They are super smooth and handle crawling/bashing just fine for me. I run 93MM SCX-10 Shocks upfront and there is a major difference in the two (obviously).

I have a set of those Ultra's too... tho' they were swapped out for the alloy BB's.
The Ultra is good shock considering their low cost and having a plastic body.
Mine never leaked and the shaft's O-ring seals come pre-assembled in a replaceable cartridge.

Weird, but the Ultra's are actually a true big bore shock (larger diameter shock body)
that holds more fluid volume then do the Traxxas alloy BB's.

Not much difference in function/performance...
But the teflon coated interior of the Traxxas alloy BB's are somewhat smoother during their compression/extension.

The Traxxas alloy BB's can fit the std Wraith sized coil springs...
and so plenty of aftermarket offerings regarding different rates.

But the Ultra's will require using a larger ID coil spring.
And need use plastic clips as pre-load spacers.
A tightened collar could plausibly pinch the shock body and cause the internal piston to bind in it's stroke.

So for the Ultra's I needed use Losi TLR coil springs that fit the Losi 4" shocks.

Black spring on the right replaces the white spring on the left. Same spring rate but the black spring just gets a white paint splotch to signify.
The black Losi TRL springs are their current release.

^ think their length is 2.75"... but Losi sells them in different rates.

Ditto, but I ran Losi race buggy hard anodized 3.5" eye to eye, threaded adjusters and dial it in with oil and Losi springs. "thumbsup"

Is every one running chassis, or axle mounted servo? I'm looking to upgrade as well, but my servo will be my limiting factor up front. I'm wanting to run about a 50% droop, as I'll be mostly crawling, trail driving.

I've ran both and axle mounted is way better for Wraith, CMS looks better, handles poorly crawling and at speed imo.

What springs do you use on the 4962's. I have them on my wroncho but I think I want to try lighter springs.

i really like the xr10 shocks. have had them on one of my wraiths for years and theyve worked like they should without leaking.

i have gmades on another wraith. great shocks but big.

The Wraith coil springs fit the 4962's ( 8 ) and 2662's ( 2 ).

Tons of aftermarket Wraith coil springs of different rates available.
Plus you can use the lite rated original Wraith coil springs.

But because my custom 1/6 scale build is heavier then any Wraith could be...
I used some stiffer integy springs designed to fit the Wraith shocks.

What springs are currently being used ? The red ones that come with the 4962's ?
(those don't work well on a lite weight Wraith but they were too lite for my 1/6 scale slug)

The lightest rated coil spring for the Wraith is grey... But they may be too soft.

Maybe look at the optional coil springs listed for the RTR Wraith ?

Not to go off topic, but are the 4962's appropriately sized for an SCX 10. I may try and split a set with a friend.

Yes, using the red springs that came on it. The wroncho sits pretty high and doesn't compress under its own weight.

Btw I have 110mm kings that came on my wraith, I think those are way too soft for anything but slow crawling. Almost no damping at all.

I run the stock Axial springs on my Ultras Fronts. Progressive TRX springs on the rear. Not noticed rubbing...but they could be. :)

I too have the PiggyBack GMade's and I think I'm going to sell them and switch to the XD's. The piggy backs function great, but because of clearance issues I have the rear ones mounted upside down. lol

I am the same and have also been running xr-10 shocks for quite some time. They work great. Currently set them up with 3 hole piston, black axial springs and 30wt front and rear... Just all around smooth and seem to handle the throttle well to....

I am by no means a suspension guru but it works for me with no leaks
