Default Wraith 2s vs 3s performance

Looking for some performance expectations running 2s vs 3s in my wraith. I have a pretty much stock Wraith spawn kit running stock (12/56) pinion/spur gears with an Axial 55t motor. AE-5 ESC. I'm running a 2s lipo and the crawling performance is great. Both low-end with a little wheel speed is almost perfect for the way I drive and I'm getting nearly 2-hour run times on a 4000mah battery. However, it is definitely lacking in speed when trail running/bashing around. My question is; If I go to 3s, and maybe even go down 1 tooth on the pinion, what kind of top speed increase will I see? Also, am I going to be much more likely to break parts and kill my run-times if I go with a 5000mah 3s battery? I don't want to just go with a faster motor because I'm not willing to give anything up on the low-end. Thanks!

Going from 2s to 3s you're not likely to go back to 2s.
You're not likely going to break parts from going up just one cell especially if you don't hammer down and mash the throttle.
Run times should increase not decrease going up in voltage with the same capacity.
going from 2s 4000mah to 3s 5000mah will definitely increase run times and technically your C rating/burst rating even more.
Low end response should be about the same and you could always adjust the ESC throttle curve or radio expo to dial it in further.

Also as you said you can always change the spur or pinion. Volt up & gear down is a popular way to go.

Guys above nailed it, 1 or 2 lower on pinion will make that lower end even smoother but the 3s will really up the torque, as a side benefit your brake (both active & drag) will improve also with the gear reduction.

Your trans gears may not last if they're still stock, but they very rarely last long any way, a set of HR, Robinson or the new SSD gears fixes that once & permanently.

Personally, unless the battery change costs you points in comp, if it were me I'd be looking for a pair a 2500mah 3s or even a trio of 1800mah as opposed to the big brick 5000, the smaller packs are lighter & so keep the CoG on you truck down.
Also if one fails you only loose a cheaper smaller pack rather than the one & only big $ pack.
This is however is of course conditional on you being able to source packs where the pricing works out right, I use HobbyKing packs where it works out for me, what you can get it may not.

In my humble opinion, 3s will definitely have more fun than 2s, however you stock gears, drive shafts and Spur gear will break down soon or later. So be ready to set some budget for upgrading your parts

Thanks for all the input folks. Never really thought about just getting multiple smaller batteries, but I think that's the way I'm going to go. Found 3s 2200mah 25c gens ace battery on amazon for $16. Very high ratings. Free shipping with prime account. Guess I'll start collecting spare parts. lol

I dunno. But three cells, two cells, one cell. Seems like 33%.

He's right. 50% of 2 is 1. So, if you add 1 to 2, you are adding 50%. If you were taking 1 from 3, you would be subtracting 33.3%. Regardless, I'm looking forward to more kick-ass!

But you're going up one cell from 2 to 3 and half, or 50% of 2 is 1, so wouldn't it be 50% more. If he jumped to 4s from 2s, you'd say he'd be doubling, correct? Just my $0.02

I have a Wraith with a 45t motor and 11/56 gears - 3S is night and day difference. It's still rather quick but very easy to control. Plenty of punch to power up a hill or obstacle. I did change the expo so half trigger is 1/3 throttle. I've ran it on some hot 80F days and never had overheating issues, although I don't abuse my vehicles like some crazier people might. I did get a 9t gear to give it a shot, but it was more a "what if" than a "I need" since I had a bit more speed than I needed.

A 55t with 12/56 would be about 10% slower than a 45t with 11/56. I would imagine it would be perfect for my tastes.

I run a 27T motor, AE-5 ESC, and Hitec 7954 servo in my Wraith. Stock axle gears and 11T/54T pinion/spur, 32P. Everything was fine until I started using 3s. Motor and ESC could get "smokin" hot at times on the 3s. Added an external BEC wired direct to the servo and everything settled down. Additional voltage supplied to the servo didn't hurt either. Just something to think about in case you have a "heat" issue.

Volt up and gear down is not just a popular trend, it is tremendously more efficient and easier on all of your electronics

In other words, it's popular because it's better, because it's logically and scientifically superior, and because it's the way God intended it to be!!

In case anyone searches this out in the future; I got myself a 3s battery and it really wakes-up the truck. As mentioned before I'm running a spawn kit, stock 12/56 gears, 55t axial crawler motor and AE-5 ESC. The crawling is exactly how it was on 2s, but has much more top-end. I can actually clean out the tires with a few stabs of the throttle and can now float the front-end over obstacles. I'd image the speed is probably similar to a stock Wraith RTR on 2s, but with the 55t motor I can crawl at a snail's pace for hours and my motor and electronics stay ice-cold.
