| Gearbox binding after gear replacement
Just replaced the gears AX80010 in the gearbox after stripping them last week. After replacing them the gearbox is binding badly. What could be the cause? I have check the bearings, no debris in the gears etc. Could I have done something wrong during assembly? Thanks! |

How tight are you turning the screws? Try them a little looser and see how it spins.

Did you account for ALL the broken teeth, over tightening screws is common Hang up and Drive |

Do you mean the screws to the gearbox or the small screws to the gear? The gears are binding even when I just presse together the gearbox halves without any screws. |

All the bearings are smooth and gearcover is cleaned. The gears are rotating freely for almost the entire rotation but sticks in one certain place. Really strange... Is there anything in the assembly that can be wrong? |

Since you state it only binds at one point during rotation... Even a micro piece of debris between the teeth can cause restriction. Even if it grinds that into dust. It's plausible that those molded cheap plastic gears are not true to round. So be sure the mesh is clean and just run it. It may become smoother as it runs and breaks in some. I replaced the plastic gears twice before switching to steel gears. Because the plastic idler gear strips easily on even 2s Especially if the slipper clutch is set tighter then it should be. But if the slipper is set loose to protect the idler gear from stripping... It slips too much when a load or bind is on the drive train. If the slipper is too tight the idler gear usually strips it in short order. Best thing you could do is lose those plastic trans gears and go with steel. More coin.... but you won't be replacing them very often. And you'll be glad you made that investment. My steel gears hold up to 3s use all day long (brush). I've even run 6s thru more then a few times without failure. Save yer pennies and pony up to steel trans gears. Last edited by TacoCrawler; 03-31-2017 at 04:23 PM. |

Thanks for the good replies. Unfortunately the little brown flake in the picture is not the culprit. Should have removed that prior to taking the picture. Could be that the gears are not fully round. I guess the only way out of this is to take it out for a spin and see if it smoothen out after a few min driving or replace the plastic gears to steel ones. Thanks again! |

Did you use the exact screws to go back in the outdrives? I built up a trans from spare parts & just grabbed 3x M2 screws from my parts box, went in fine seemingly no prob, till I put the trans together & had 2 tight spots at 4 & 8 o'clock. Turned out 2 of the random screws I'd grabbed had slightly bigger diam heads on them & was just enough to press on the inside rim of the gear & distort it out of round. Dug out different screws, measured & found 2 with smaller OD & then no more prob. The ultimate solution is some metal gears, most of my rigs have the HotRacing, I've a set od the SSD here to try also. |

Thanks for the reply. Problem is however already solved. It must have been debris in the gears that caused it to bind. Couldn't see anything but gave it a spray with compressed air and now it works fine |
