Wraith based Rock Bouncer 3 Attachment(s) So I've been wanting to do a Wraith based rock bouncer for a while now. I ended up ordering one of those steel tube rock bouncer cages on FleaBay and it actually looks pretty nice. Getting a parts list together of the parts I don't have and I have a question. I'm interested in doing a trailing arm set up on this thing. I've actually mocked up my stock, plastic Losi Baja Rey trailing arms and stock plastic uppers to an aluminum Wraith skid I had in the parts bin. They look sweet and are definitely the length I want. I did have to clearance the aluminum skid with a dremel to fit the wider ends in. I also had to take some of the outer opening of the skid and widen it out at an angle with the dremel. Unfortunately, the ends of these trailing arms are so wide that even with what I have clearenced on the skid, they don't seem to allow for much articulation. Straight up and down, cycling the suspension is great. But, any sort of flex and they bind up and there's not much more I can safely clearance from the skid. So, I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with Bomber trailing arms in their Wraith skid? I'm thinking if I can find a trailing arm with narrower ends, I'll be fine. I just hate to order the $45 worth of parts without any intel. Pics below for what I've mocked up with the Losi parts. |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer I can't answer your question, but can I ask why you want to use trailing arms in the first place? Is there a performance improvement going this route or is just cosmetic? I ask because I'm redoing my son's Wraith into more of a rock racer than crawler and if I'm missing something obvious I'd like to know about it! Thanks. Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer I don’t think your driveshaft will clear the upper links but it may. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F141959238574 Or https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F381740667419 |

Good find! Those definitely look like they will have better clearance in the Wraith skid! Thanks Bud!"thumbsup" |

Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer I'm thinkin I wanna put a big, honkin scale V8 motor in this thing. I've been looking on EBAY and all points in between. I checked out Harley's rock bouncer build, and I know he found a 1/8 Monogram model V8. But, so far I've found nothing. (1/8 seems to be the scale needed). Anyone know of a source??? |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer Didja try ShapeWays? I'm looking at various places now... on Amazon there's a large scale Model T for $703 (NO TYPO!!!) and a 1/12th scale Fiat Topolino dragster with an exposed monster V-8... Shapeways Bomber LS1 (already supposed to be used in 1/10th R/C): https://www.shapeways.com/product/H8...li=marketplace It's hollow and can house a receiver... around $45. |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer Quote:
Everything I found was just blocks, where you had to by all the pieces/parts separate, which seemed to add up $$$ quickly! I have not used a 3D printer myself. I would assume I can have the engine scaled to the dimensions I would like correct? |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer If you want to start with something cheap and basic.... And add some creativity... https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2153072 It's an engine block, Designed to be a 540 Motor Sleeve. The Print files include the Block and Heads, front Timing Cover and Oil Pan as one piece, and separate Oil Filter. It's something that you can add or make, any valve covers you want, and a variety of intakes or EFI Systems. The Print is around $3-5.00, plus shipping. If you've never used Thingiverse before, I can ATTEMPT to guide you some... ;-) EDIT: I logged on to Treatstock, the average is more like $5-7.00... but still not much. I'm going to want one, if I ever get my Deadbolt. Definitely want to do a forward Motor and opening Hood. |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer Looks pretty good Carmine! |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer 1 Attachment(s) The big, brown truck showed up today!"thumbsup" |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer Please don't hate me if I'm wrong... are those the KYX/Integy Wraith axles that use a 10.2 pumpkin? |

Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer 6 Attachment(s) Got started mocking some things up after dinner tonight. Going together very smoothly. The Yeti Trailing arm set up is looking and feeling sweet. Now that I know it's going to work, I'm going to pop for the aluminum Yeti uppers and trailing arms."thumbsup" Below are some pics so far. I also had some Ti uppers and lowers for the front from an SCX10. They seem to be the perfect length. Both front and rear have good diff/pinion angles right now."thumbsup" I really like the little magnetic "hood" access up front too. (See pics). Pretty sure this is where my ESC, BEC and Rx are going to live."thumbsup" Still kicking around what color I wanna do the cage in. I've got a set of silver bead locks with black rings I think I'm going to mount as well. Right now, I'm thinking a really bright green. |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer 1 Attachment(s) Woke up early this morning, brewed a cup and spent a little time on this beast before work. I got all the black oxide hardware swapped out for stainless, and I also got the ShowDowns spooned on to the Black and Silver beadlocks. Looks a good bit cleaner IMHO. |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer It does look better. I would leave the cage black and just carry the black and silver theme throughout. Unless you can get it powder coated... |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer Quote:
Yeah, the black cage is definitely growing on me. It's just that you see so many black cages. I can get it powder coated - there's a guy not far from my house that does it. He did a bike frame for me for like $65, so I'm guessing this would be about $20-30. We'll see. Still have a lot of mock up to do. Going to try and work on cutting and trimming my old Deadbolt interior to fit in this cage tonight. |

Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer Quote:
I've used aircraft stripper on bike frames before as well. You are correct! F--king ouch when it gets on your skin!:lmao: |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer 3 Attachment(s) I was able to get the old Deadbolt interior trimmed up reasonably well to fit within the rock bouncer cage. It's not perfect, but looks pretty good overall. Ideally, I wanted to use a Wraith Spawn interior, but they seem to be as rare as hen's teeth at the moment!:lmao: I may still go that route if and when they become available again, but this works for the time being at least. At the back right area of the interior, I had to cut the passenger seat away to create the offset I needed. That left a small void that I intend to fill with a Nitrous bottle and fire extinguisher mounted to the frame. I think it will make it look more like an access panel with a little bit of creativity. |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer 1 Attachment(s) Mocked up some side panels for this sucker last night. My thinking is, they will help it glide and slide through and past rocks and other obstacles versus getting hung up on the cage. And, it hides the fact that the interior is just flat across on the underside. This is the first set I came up with. I may do a few tweaks here and there. Difficult getting them the way I like them on this rig with all the different bends, angles and directions of the tubing of this cage. |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer 4 Attachment(s) I got the SSD Ti uppers and SSD aluminum lowers installed on the rig last night. I had also in-boarded the rear shocks, but didn't like how far they were canted in. So I used some smaller spacers to bring them in a bit closer. The suspension feels great on this thing and the flex and articulation are saaaawwweeeeetttt! Can't wait to shake this sucker down!"thumbsup" |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer That looks GOOD Mike!!!! "thumbsup" "thumbsup" That Axle is a real Jewel too! If you don't mind me asking, how much $$$?? I really think I may try to do that rear setup on Spawned. With most of my weight shoved up front, even with 1.07lb rear Springs, it can't get full compression on its own! The Bomber Trailing Arms are sounding like a great idea. Gives some cantilever action, dividing the Spring Tension. It sorta works now, but from ANY sized jump, the rear is going to come CRASHING down Hard, with the 1lb Springs on her now!!! Trailing Arms ARE the solution... Yours is shaping up quite nicely - and QUICKLY!! |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer It does look pretty sharp. Have you considered fitting the old set of trailing arms in the front just to see what it looks like? |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer Quote:
That said, if they provide a noticeable performance enhancement, I'm down."thumbsup" |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer On the front, they’re just called “leading arms”. "thumbsup" And yes, they do look very strange. Sorry if it was answered somewhere but what are those tires? Almost looks like cut n grooved BFGs? |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer Tim Camerons new bouncer has "leading arms", its a different looking setup for sure. As for if its better, I think it might be too new to really get a good idea yet. Great looking build BTW! and I like the black cage as is, the brightly colored cages seem a bit too common to me. |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer The SMTs have them. |

Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer 2 Attachment(s) I got the SSD scale steel drive shafts installed after dinner tonight. Ordered the Yeti rear for the length with the Yeti trailing arm set up. Then a standard Wraith front. I love that they have a scale look to them with this rig being so transparent. "thumbsup" Threw the battery in and played with my shock set up a bit as well. I think she's stancing pretty good now. Took a bit of pre-load out of the rear and moved 1 mounting location. Added a bit of pre-load up front and also moved 1 mounting location. Now, I've just got to decide what is going to power this beast!? Given the 1:1's are all INSANE motor, I think it's gotta be brushless and a higher KV rating. Thoughts? |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer Something in the range of 3500kv on 4s, or 4500kv on 3s, in a 550 sized can is where I'd start looking. I had a 56mm 3400kv on 4s in my sand Wraith and wished I'd gone with a longer can from the start. I was on the verge of buying a Tenshock sc411 4600kv, (which would fit, and allegedly will take 4s, and produces 2000w) but shifted gears and went back to brushed instead. If you went with something like that, you'd definitely find your weak links real quick! |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer That Rig is shaping up nicely!! Hey, is that the $45.00 cage I keep seeing on EvilBay? It looks similar, but I'm not sure. Regardless, it looks great, and the Trailing Arms really make it! ....... LEADING Arms???? Who knows! It's all about the plushest Suspension, for going 100mph over things that would DESTROY a Street Truck!! It MIGHT work.... Doesn't cost you anything to at least try it out, right? |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer @PoorManRC - My guess Carmine is that it would be the same one or very similar. I scored this chassis off of FleaBay as well. It was $57 shipped. (RC Mart). Honestly, I'm pretty impressed overall for a no-name chassis. Welds are pretty decent, multiple shock mounting locations, hinged flip up "hood" with rare earth magnet latch. Not too bad for the $. |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer 2 Attachment(s) Decided to add a bit of "scale factor" last night. Still not having a lot of luck finding a faux engine to throw up front. I'm not really sure I have the real estate to do it either. Once the ESC, BEC and Rx are up there, not a lot of room left. I suppose I could mount the Rx and BEC out back in the fuel cell, but then I have to contend with the runs to the servo and ESC up front. Unless I could package the ESC, BEC and Rx all out back somehow - then I'd only have the servo lead to run back and I could stash that in some small, black wire loom. IDK - I'll keep fiddling with it and see what I can come up with. |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer 1 Attachment(s) It's a little thing, but the RED mounting tabs for the fuel cell were bothering me. I wanted them to blend in more with the chassis and also make the black zip ties disappear. A touch of black paint and wallah! I generally hate using zip ties to mount stuff, but there really isn't a better way on this round tube chassis without getting in to some full blown fabrication. So, zip ties it is!"thumbsup" |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer 1 Attachment(s) It's called "FLEX FRIDAY" right!? Dirty Steve and the "Barronco" look tiny next to this beast! |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer 3 Attachment(s) So, with packaging the electronics - ESC, BEC, Rx, and not really being able to find a faux motor I like, I've kinda given up on that idea. Switching gears, I'm thinking I might do an actual hood versus the cage latch hood so I can stash / conceal the electronics up front and hide / protect the battery. I've been using an old AE2 ESC, my Rx and BEC to play around with how things would fit and look, and i'm not digging them being all exposed up there. Just doesn't look clean. Started throwing together a couple patterns today to mock some things up. I definitely like that this scenario will conceal everything. My plan is to bend it up in aluminum, then figure out a way to hinge it for ease of battery access. I may use the existing frame tabs to do that, but with the thinner gauge aluminum I plan on using, I'm not sure how long the integrated, bent tabs I would do on the hood to interface with the frame tabs would hold up. If I don't use the frame tabs, I happen to have an LED light bar that fits and will mount perfectly between them, which would be cool. "thumbsup" |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer 3 Attachment(s) Still playing around with patterns for panels. I vastly simplified my previous version of the side chassis panel. I think it will work much better when translated in to aluminum. (1st pic) I've also pretty well got the hood with front side panel area where I want it. Although I'm still scratching my head on a hinging mechanism. (2nd pic) Lastly, toying with the idea of a roof panel, but still not 100% on that. (3rd pic) |
Re: Wraith based Rock Bouncer The roof seems like a good fit. Does make the shortness of the driver more obvious. Is the spawn interior taller?( I should know i own one...but no interior on mine) Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk |
