Wraith Flex

Purchased one of the older Wraith Spawn Kits an finished up it. Ran it for the first time over the weekend. Have done some searching, but most of the info is old, so checking for an update. Trying to get some more articulation. My grandsons $100 Danchee Ridgerock has more flex than my wraith. My shocks get pretty hard on the compression the least 1/2" I noticed, where his you can push the thing all the way down. I realize we are comparing 2 different rigs and quality, but was kinda disappointed when my rig was lifting tires and his was crawling through things. The kit came with the axial alum lower arms and plastic uppers. Would something like the vanquish kit help?

Re: Wraith Flex

Sounds like you just need to rebuild those shocks.
Stock shocks will have plenty of that flex that you are after.
It sounds like the shocks might have too much shock oil in them and / or you might have bent shock shafts. Whatever it is, the shock should be able to go full travel so if it cant, pull it apart and rebuild it with some new oil.
Vanquish Stage One kit isnt going to help with flex but rather is a high quality durablity / reliabilty upgrade for your steering / axles.

What weight oil is a good starting point for The Wraith?

I run Yeti front shocks on my Wraith. Lowers CoG and end result is mildly more flex as well. May not beat him on a the flex-o-meter but it’ll get him in the real world.

Sounds like to much shock oil to me as well.

When you fill the shock without a spring, and sealed up, The shaft should rebound about an 1/8 of an inch. More than that and you have too much shock oil. Less and you have too little.

I usually start with 30 wt, and tune from there.

Sounds like I have to much oil. I get probably 1/2" of rebound. Will empty some out and try it again.

Shoot, stock Axial shocks? You ought to just run a few more batteries through it and those shocks should empty themselves!

This is the reason why I switched from stock to Traxxas Big Bore shocks

Watched an interesting youtube video a while ago and can't find it now. Anyway, it was a demonstration on how to fill shocks, any brand according to the video. Once you've gone through the air bleeding process, fill the shock to the top, just to the point of overflowing. Push the piston to the top of the shock so the top of the piston is just at the top of the oil level. Some oil will be pushed out as the area of the piston rod below the piston reduces the amount of oil the bottom of the shock can hold relative to the area above the piston. Put the cap on and tighten down to seal the shock. A little more oil will be displaced by the shock seal as you tighten the cap. One thing of interest to me is, the demo showed to use a knife blade to cut a "channel" in the cap threads so the displaced oil had a place to flow out when tightening down the cap. Didn't do that when I tested the theory but everything else seemed to work exactly as the video showed. I get the 1/8" rebound lonelycreeper mentioned on every shock I've done this way, 4-5 different shock brands.

Maybe I haven't looked close enough at the manual instructions for filling shocks so I can't say if the manufacturers show or describe the oil fill and piston at the top of the shock procedure but glad I got educated to that. Always something new to learn in this hobby.

Re: Wraith Flex

Don't chase flex. It's overrated. The stock rig has plenty. A good rule of thumb is no more than 1 tire height worth.

Also, the Ridgerock is a MOA, not a shafty like the Wraith. It's not going to lift wheels like yours does.

This...^^^^^. Partly of why I recommended shorter shocks.

Mostly stock kit spawn. Move upper rear shock mount to the forward most hole and front upper to the middle hole. As for lifting a tire on an incline, underdriven axles help a little but I don't think you will ever get a shafty to sit as flat as a moa righttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b0e58af88a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6f8c509c94.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...45c33b16ba.jpg

Now it's gear grind Friday.

Went to take my wraith for a spin, and heard a horrible grinding sound coming from inside the tranny somewhere.

Re: Wraith Flex

Personally I’ve never seen from factory shocks set up right. I just dealt with mine on my Wraith. Sounds like too much oil and air. Pull spring, shock cap, drain oil. If using for mainly crawling I’d start with 40 front 30 rear oil. Fill body 3/4 full. Compress shaft half way replace cap. You can go a bit further and pull bottom shock body cap where shaft slides through and apply some slime or heavy grease. That should get you pretty close. Use the least amount of preload as possible and play with the top shock location. This will drastically reduce the amount of leaking that comes with the factory Axial shocks. Hope this helps
