Locked Up's XR10 build

Here is my XR10 (AX50062) writeup:
http://www.noeither.com/rc/tech/xr10-1
************************************************** ***

My package arrived this evening!

http://s3.postimage.org/RYV2S.jpg

Buildup will start tonight with the assistance of my "rock dog". I will post up as many pics as I can. A fully detailed version of the build itself will also end up on my website.

Initial specs will include:
Machined bent links
Holmes 40t Hand wounds
sidewinder on 3S
CC BEC
Rovers
Hobbico CS-170
Spektrum SR3500

Being that this is my first MOA, I'll keep my DX3R until I get used to the extra functionality ... or the cutting brake option becomes available .... or I get a wild hair up my rear for a 4PK.

I'm also looking at doing dual ESCs or a DX6 and will most likely go to an even stronger servo and run 7.2v on it.

I haven't been this excited in a long time!

Do yourself a favor and just jump right into the 4PK, it will be something you never question why you did it 8)

Ric,
Yes. I'm already on the second kit.

I actually would already have one but ...
I wish the RX's were smaller so they could fit in my scaler electronics box.

Actually, I need to research them. I have lots of questions about how they work... do they do mixing and how would that all tie in once the cutting brakes come out.... etc.

Knowing me, I'll have one here next week with new ESCs and a servo.

If you still in town I would be over right now helping you.

Then I take it home with me.

Just finished the front axle. Research, beer and pizza slowing me down .... and the fact I'm taking pictures and writing up some notes.;-)

Some initial impressions are that the shafts look dang stout and I have yet to see a Phillips head screw... all hex drives which is nice.

Instructions have been great so far which is sort of as expected from Axial.

I just switched over to these. Pretty small, longer than a spektrum RX though.

Yeah. So that won't work with a 4pk?

That is what I was told in another thread.

I too wish they could make something as small as a SR3500 but maybe they will get there eventually.

-----------------------------

Thanks for the pics Harley.
Those new RX's are a lot smaller than the old ones.

I could probably make up the extra space by pulling the sidewinder out of my sclaer box. I went through your tutorial and I get how it will work (as much as I can without out touching one). I know I can dig up a 4PK for a few bucks less but the fact that the new radio comes with the smaller RX makes it worth it to me. So 4PKS it is.

Added to my shopping list:
Futaba 4PKS
Extra RX
3 Tekin FXRs (2 for XR10 & one for scaler)

So, getting back to my build...
I have completed the rolling chassis minus the wheels & tires. Will knock those and the body out today so I should have my pics and most of my writeup ready tonight. I'd do it now but I have a "honeydo" list today.

So far the design looks very good and I can certainly see this thing eating up some courses. I still see room for personalized tweaks and I have some radical ideas based on some TXRCRCA conversations but we'll have to wait on those.

I also need to figure out what batteries will fit best in there AND what will provide proper juice for the dual Motors & ESCs. So, I'm open to suggestions from yall. I prefer to have several smaller batteries that last just long enough to get me through a course so something like an 800mah will probably be fine for my purposes if it can support the load.
"thumbsup"

For the servo, I am going to order an Airtronics 94780. 423 in/oz should cut it.

I run the Hobby King 1050 3s 40c packs. They are cheap, decently sized and have plenty of punch. Also, check out the Thunder Power 850 3s 45c packs. Both have worked out great for me.

Just like spektrum, air rx's only work with air radios. I believe it is an FCC regulation.

Rig Rocker 08-28-2010 11:10 AM

Hey Harley, Do you have the size of the new receivers footprint?

I'm already set on a 4PKS.

I know a stick has more options, buttons and smaller RX's but....
I can drive with one hand with a pistol. And if I need to scramble on the rocks, it's easy to hold onto the pistol and still be making forward progress or holding position if I need a hand to catch myself on some rocks. Pistol grip is just easier to hold on to in all situations.
