| xr10 gearbox question
I did some searching and came up with minimal awnsers.. I picked up a artr xr10 with electronics and only run once for $200 I am wanting to upgrade it with aluminum gearboxes on the cheap(yes I know) but I've read where people say to stay away from HR parts and for the most part I agree but for the transmission they have a alumn gearbox with oversized bearings for $38 and that includeds the 4mm motor plate. I would love to put VP stuff on it but my budget doesnt allow and I am just going to casual crawl with it. Whats peoples experience with the gearbox?(I know most of there stuff is junk..ie knuckles, etc) Rich |

I run the HR gear cases that use the 8mm bearings and just put traxxas bronze bushings in their place, so far i'm very happy with HR stuff, I have lots of HR parts on my XR10 and don't regret buying any of it. (I do run VP motor plates to take care of the bearings on the motor plate) I honestly don't get the whole deal about HR being so terrible. yeah its not top notch shit, but its not terrible either. |

I spent $70 on shotty HR parts (company even agreed they had issues with the parts) and I sent them back to the company and they say they never got them. My first and last experience with HR was a negative one so thats why I don't buy their stuff anymore. I've seen people run HR with no problems (as shown in this thread) but when other companies sell similar products for a similar price then that's the route I'll take. I've also seen enough other people that have had problems with HR parts and have a hard time contacting the company that confirm my reasoning *to me*. I'm not trying to bash HR or the people who use HR; I'm just trying to offer a reason why some people don't recommend them. Last edited by Omega-Tron; 11-03-2011 at 10:38 AM. |

another option other than vp (i love their products), or the hit or miss hr is the rc4wd cases. they are about the same price as hr with the larger bearings but from delrin i believe so they are lighter weight.

If your just messing around and not doing a lot of comps, just run it with all the stock parts and some VP bushings. I ran mine this way for about three months. A few bad hits took out my stock gears, over time I up graded. I didn't have to.......but after an impulse buy, I just ended up this way.

are you really gonna save any money by going with the HR cases and having to get the VP bushings rather than getting the VP cases and plates that come with bearings?

What batteries are you planning to run it on? My XR10 was fine on 2S, but ate the stock gears on 4S within 5 mins. If you plan on using 2S i'd honestly just give it a go stock see how you get on One thing i would strongly advise is the shim out the diff. It's been posted previously by a few guys on here, basically your trying to push the axle bearing up towards the motor mount. Take the bottom half of the axle, a piece of paper and some thin glue. Cut the paper thin enough to fit in the grove where the bearing sits, lightly glue it in place, pop the bearing back in and see if it's tight enough, if not repeat. Wish i'd known about this mode before i chumped up and bought the VP stuff Cheers Mark |

Thank you to everyone for there input IF this was my main comp truck I would have splurged for the VP products, but since this is just a tinker toy I just went with the hr cases that have the larger bearings in the housing and there 4mm motor plate with bigger bearings. For $35 a piece(thats for the gearbox, bearings, and motor plate) I figure I can afford to tinker with it for awhile. I have my lathe and mill setup in the shop so i can always machine it if need be. I am going to put in better bearings from the get go, previous experience from cheaper products is the bearings are short cut to save money. And I saw the bearing mod and I was planning on tinkering with that too, its getting to be pretty cold here in the midwest to be out playing so I am gearing up for my winter builds. As far as bushings go I saw everyones thoughts but personally I have a BUNCH of old bearings from my OG days of clodbusters and other tamiya/kyosho kits. Now you want to talk about hard bushings, they wore out the shafts before the bushing would wear out. In fact (this says how old I am) I would run bushings in a 11tooth Kyosho clutch bell on my Ofna Monster Blazer . Thanks guys Rich |
