What setup were you running in the transmissions? VP bushings or factory Axial bearings?

Man, that sucks that everyone is having issues. I did the 9mil mod and havent even worried about it. Sorry to hear all you guys having failures. I am going to VP bling, but havent had issues with mine yet. I am just going to the VP for that bomb proof setup.

Yup, I lost the final in the rear axle during a comp a couple weeks ago, and then I lost the final in my front axle yesterday.

Time to rebuild both axles now.

what sucks worse is that it has about 2 hrs of run time on it. I just feel it should have lasted longer in my back yard for a $300.00 kit.

I ordered the hardened steal set of gears - guess I need to order some bearings as well.

Can you post a link/part# for the bullet proof bearings since I'm going to be installing the new gears as well..

My xr lasted 30 seconds until the final drive gear in rear let loose. What led to this problem is that i found the bearing on the final drive gear had a cracked race this made a lot of play in the meshing of the gears. I should of inspected better during the initial assembly. Anyways I ordered up all axial lightened hardened gears and I will mill out the motor plate and upgrade to larger bearings should have it up and running by Wednesday or Thursday. Besides this little snag the rig is awesome I just wish companies in general would just charge a few bucks more and give us some upgraded gears and other little items that will save us some heartache. We end up spending it anyways and I expect these kind of problems when using all types of Rc, but this can be very discouraging for a newcomer.

A couple things about the XR10 axles, trans and gears.

(A) The tiny bearings in the trans are not up to the task. Don't think it is an Axial thing the portal bearings in the Gmade R1 are the same and they fail all the time. Too small a bearing for the task.

Solutions -
Replace the bearings with bushings. The easiest and cheapest quick fix.
Replace the motor Plate with the Axial heavy duty, Vanquish or hot racing plate that support the bigger bearing.
Mod the stock plate to take the bigger bearings.
Use either bushings or the Axial, Vanquish, Hot Racing or RC4WD cover that supports the bigger bearings.

(B) The gears are not hardened and are just pressed sintered gears.

Solutions -
RC4WD hardened gears, Hot Racing hardened gears or Axial hardened gear sets. I have heard that the Hot Racing final gear is not all that great, can't verify or not verify that.

(C) There is flex in the rear axle housing. Whoever thought it would be a good idea to throw a hinge in a plastic axle is not all there.

Solution -

There is a mod on the forums called the 2 screw or 2 bolt mod, can't seem to fint it at the moment but if you look its here. You wind uo with an axle that looks like this.

(not my pic, thanks to the owner)

It has the 2 extra bolts holding the case halves together on both sides of the final gear rather than the 2 that are there now.

Watch the size of top screws on the top of the rear axle, as in the instructions there are specific sizes and if using the wrong size immediate gear failure will result. If the screws used are too long the hit the final drive gear and skew it thus causing gear misalignment and pop there go the gears.

Had a person changed out the tiny bearings for bushings and done the 2 bolt mod the stock gears will last a ton longer. There have been guys running stock gears for over a year with the mods done.

All the info I posted is on this forum, it may take a bit to find at times but it is all here. Some research time can save a ton of down time and money.

For the record the XR10 was never a 300 dollar kit. It is a 300 dollar kit because to find one is rare so the cost of the kit goes up. I believe the intended retail was in the area of 169 bucks.

use these instead of the 5x8x2.5mm bearings
Oilite*Bushings,*5x8x2.5mm...
I run the RC4WD gears and the Vanquish plates and cases
2 years and a lot of comps...and still rolling
