SOLUTION: Mod for no longer available Final gear

So as this started out I had a powdered metal 22tooth final drive gear that i threw in after breaking my machined one. It lasted about an hour before it said goodbye.

Much to my dismay this gear is out of stock pretty much everywhere. AX30767.

So after doing some poking around It was brought to my attention to try and use a pinion gear. So i bit and this is what followed.

What you need:
Robinson racing machined 22tooth 48 pitch 5mm bore pinion

dremel
a little bit of time
broken xr10 parts

This was suprisingly simple to do, and i have put around 20 hours on it so far with no breakage.

First what you need to do is mod the axle cases. A dremel works best in this situation. You need to remove some of the plastic on the top half of the housing that supports the large 10x15x4 bearing.

You need to grind down as shown removing roughly half of the plastic support. You can grab your new RR pinion gear and use it as a template. You will see where it is hitting and can fine tune accordingly.

Next up are the mods to the crosshaft. The grub screw will land approx .7inches from the end of the shaft as shown. You need to take your dremel with weapon of choice( i used a sanding drum) and file down a flat surface for the grub screw to clamp on. You will also need to either sand down the grub screw, or use a shorter one as the one that comes with the pinion gear is too long and interferes with the bearings and upper case.

One last step is to take the dremel and sanding drum and sand down the pinion gear as shown, if not it will interfere with the 10x15x4 bearing as you can see that it did on my setup.

Bolt it all back together and enjoy no more breaking, and if so a $9 replaceable option.

I'm not pushing their product but I just got a full set of XR10 gears from HotRacing. I got the lightened version. They look pretty good. I have about 4 runs on them. I have a lot of HR parts. Still can't find the plastic axle parts. I am lucky I have a couple fronts and one rear axle case for spares.
