How hard to build a kit?

I am looking at getting a yxl kit. Never built a kit but have been into rcs about 5 years and tore a few down and fixed which are mostly traxxas. I have good mechanical aptitude. Just wonder how time consuming it is being time is not always on my side. However, I think it would be fun to build. Thanks.

6-8 hours of pure bliss. It's easy peasy except attaching the front clip to the chassis. The flimsy top plate is just that flimsy, and it's a pain to get the holes lined up through the bottom from the aluminum skid plate. If did it again, I would skip the electronics till very last. This will give you finger room to help align the posts from the top plate with the skid plate on the bottom of the chassis. The instructions are pretty darn good. I would recommend using gorilla tape on the inside of the tires to reduce the Ballon effect and use 500k rear and 200k front different fluids. As far as the shocks go, I have not had a chance to tune them to my liking yet. Somebody else should chime in on that.

I have 3 other RC and the YXL was my first kit build. It was fun and challenging to be polite about it. Plan your upgrades accordingly to avoid a do over.

Ditto, if you can build Legos and are good with a screwdriver then this should not be an issue. Take your time, make sure you have good quality tools, blue locktite, some sort of grease and patience. Biggest thing is to not over tighten anything. The yeti was my first kit and took me about 2 weeks at the most. Maybe an hour-ish each night with the normal wife, 6 yo, 9 mo and TV distractions.... Or help as they like to call it. I also had a few days added waiting for the dhawk diff spacers.

In all actuallity the hardest and most stressful thing to deal with on my builds has been painting the bodies. I seem to really screw that up, I am at the point I believe the humidity is my biggest enemy so I may try the next one early in the morning. Then there are the stickers....

Check out the Yeti XL page by page video by Fast Eddy on YouTube.

You can see exactly what it takes to build one.

You will want this . Trust me it is worth every penny over the frustration of installing the stock piece.

Prepare you forearms!

The Yeti XL was my first build and I loved every second of it. I honestly wish I could do it all again over and over.

One more thing: This guys video series is invaluable. He doesn't finish (not sure why) but takes you through about 90% of the whole process step by step. I didn't watch every second, but it was really reassuring to know that I could reference something if I needed to.

Good luck with the build.

Definitely invest in an aluminium top brace and as others have said, don't overtighten the screws into plastic. I personally found the Axial plastic way too soft and pretty easy to strip. But it's not that complicated to build apart from attaching the front shock assembly to the chassis. That took some trial and error to get it in.

BUY THE KIT, BUILD THE KIT, EMBRACE THE KIT!

DO IT.....DO IT!!

It is actually easier since the parts are larger than most kits.

Thanks for all the advice. You guys sold me on the kit. I am in process of selling off yeti and teaxxas then diving in. Thanks for the help.

Got this clip today. It comes with 4 long screws and 4 short screws. So my question is what screws go where? On the old setup 4 screws come up from the bottom into the plate. The new setup looks like I need to put screws in the bottom and top. So what goes where?

Long ones on the bottom and the shorts on top. I put the posts and long screws first...not too tight..then the plate and short screws. Screw it all together slowly and make sure the steering rack posts go into there homes.

So the short screws are for the top of the posts and long screws are for the bottom of the posts.

Yes it is kind of like a not so fun puzzle getting everything lined.

Only up to rear diff on mine and already regretting not having any power driver hex bits. Going to end up with popeye arms. Time to invest I think
