Shimming doesn't help ... You have to remove the haunch . That is the only thing that gets you closer... Send it to me if you don't feel comfortable... I'll do it for free.. Take the time and read RRC threads !!! It will save you a of Headaches and Money Bud!! Time well spent!!
I don't doubt that the BHB mod works, I'm just trying to visualize it. Am I correct in thinking that the poor contact patch is because the pinion sits too close to the ring gear and the gears are "bottoming out" as you assemble the axle (or bulkhead) not allowing them to mesh all the way, this must also put considerable axial force on the pinion forcing the whole works out the back of the housing. If you take the step off it moves the pinion away from the ring which prevents the gears bottoming out, which actually results in a more complete mesh when you assemble it and also eliminates the axial force on the pinion forcing it out the back of the housing.

Does this sound right or am I out to lunch.

Yep you got it !!
It Destroys Axial's reputation, bearings, plastic and aluminum housings and your FUN plus the Ebay account takes a pretty big hit to if you don't want to just look at it...or try to upgrade your way out of it...

Thanks again for figuring this out, it's a good catch to figure out you have to move the pinion in the opposite direction to the way you think it needs to go to make it go in the direction it actually needs to go.

I imagine this has probably cost you a few dollars, that stinks, I appreciate your efforts, without them I have no doubt it would have cost me more than the $50 it did.

and your right... looking at the were marks I figured it needed to go in ... but that's only possible by moving THE PINION OUT lol
no wonder why Axial and some RRC members think I FN nuts...lol
I'm am and it's all because of the HD gears lol

BUT AFTER THE MOD

Just got my first set of the HD gears in that I ordered, another set coming from axial once they're in stock....

Being new to the RC game I'm slightly confused about the shimming process. I know I want a tight (but not too tight) mesh with the ring and pinion. By removing the shoulder off the back of the teeth I assume you have to replace the extra space that creates with shims to tighten everything back up on the pinion assembly? And as far as the order of things:

Pinion teeth > first bearing > necessary shims > spacer > bearing > C clip, correct?

How do you guys check to see if the mesh is correct after doing the mod and everything?

Thanks for any help, sorry if this doesn't make sense just trying to get some clarification before I tear the truck apart. This truck is so fun when it's running

He ya go bbos12.

Thanks 47yok! I'll give that a try for the mesh. As far as the order of bearings/spacer/shims did I have the right idea above?

I don't think it matters to much where the shims are located..as along as you install the bearing first like you stated

for example I installed the bulk head in this order bearing
and in the rear (to help protect against grime before my driveshaft boot mod)
bearing hope that helps bos man

Your is correct. What bhb says. Bearing first.
I couldn't locate any shims online today.
Avidrc is where I got bearings. They have shims but
Not the right size. I put a note in to them to make a shim for this pinion.
I have some clearance now but it's still better than out the box.
Maybe next month I'll be more concerned if I decide to get the dhawk bulkhead.

I have recently started thinking losi xxl brushless.

I assumed you'd need quite a bit of shimming to "tighten" up the slack created from grinding off that shoulder between the teeth and the C clip? Or is not as important to keep the bearings and spaced from moving along the pinion slightly?

Thank you both! I had the front drive shaft break (at the pinion, broke inside the joint) as well as broken teeth on the front spur and a blown up diff bearing. I have no idea what caused what but it was disappointing to see so much carnage so soon. This mod should definitely keep that from happening as often!

WELL its funny that you mentioned that ... The one of the selling points for the hd gears (NO SHIMS REQUIRED) THATS (IS)THE CAUSE PLUS THE HELIC BEVEL MESH WAS WAY DIFFERENT TOLERANCES THAN THE STRAIGHT CUT

I'll check the depth differences with my dial indicator for accurate pinion depths...even tho this thing isn't a space shuttle

I removed to material the 2nd time I grinder on it.
Not enough the first time. Still notchy.
2nd time a little to much. Now my pinion floats about
1.5 mm. I don't think it will be to bad. Maybe the bevel gears might break at some piont. But the heat caused from the friction before is gone. That makes it 100% better.
Thanks bhb!!

just having fun.. no harm meant ...It was going along with what you said.. (and poking fun at my self for breaking out the dial indicators.) Remember that I've had my mod ridiculed ...when I was just trying to help...that tends to hit a nerve..especially when I don't deserve it.. like 47OK just messaged me saying that he's figured out the REAL problem...But far as I know I'm came up with the mod and I've also had almost 60 6s runs for testing for you guys...ALWAYS willing to listen but think it out first..
