first rc and first build log

As the title says this is my first rc and I am going to try and build it, so any advice as I do this is welcome.

I bought the kit version and it should be here any day now.

I finished reading through a lot of these posts and decided that as I build this I will do a lot of the upgrades that I have been reading about.

Getting ready to place the first order for pages 11-15 (Front/rear diffs and rear axle) of the manual:

YEX11C01 Aluminum Differential Case

YEX1201 Aluminum Front Bulkhead Gearbox

YEX331G01 Aluminum and Carbon Fiber Front Bulkhead and Skid Plate

YEX14U01 Aluminum Front Clip

YEX2201 Rear Axle Aluminum Adapter

Fast Eddie Sealed Bearing Kit

Front/Rear Bevel Gears should I order 2 sets to do front and rear or 1 just for the rear

Re: first rc and first build log

Nice List man !!! The XL is my first Rc as well ... I wish that I went about it as you are ... I bought a RTR and had a crash course on driving, learning and fixing lol
The XL is a beast and words wont prepare you for its RAW POWER !! Good Luck and welcome to the XL community !!

As for the gears, They are Beveled cut "straight" gears with quality material so i'm sure they will hold up . The biggest advantage with this set is the Diff gears !! I've had the back of a Axial sun gear/drive gear blow out.. The GPM ones are far superior ! I think they will work well with the HR bulkhead because they are for the V1 gear speck ...

Thanks for the welcome.

You do not think it is overkill do ya.

I did not look at prices until today and realized they total more than the YXL.

Thinking about just getting the bulkhead gearbox, bearings and the gpm gears only...still not sure about the Diff case.

Re: first rc and first build log

Parts are pricey mate, I'd just upgrade as you break stuff, no point buying stuff you may never need.
I think the replacing the stock steering is a must first up and adding a rear sway bar, Stiffer springs and thinker shock oil.
That's where I'd start.

I've run mine about 5-6 times now and nothing has broken (yet). A steering link popped off. Simple fix popped it back on, when I got home I added a washer. Oh and a drive shaft pin snapped. That's about it so far

Re: first rc and first build log

A front aluminum bulkhead is a must buy item. The stock plastic one allows too much flex and *will* cause you to ruin the ring and pinion in short order. I knew about the issue when I was putting my kit together but decided I would fix it when it broke. Ya, that was quick

Re: first rc and first build log

Well this is one of the parts from Axial I have been pleasantly surprised about. I have used the plastic bulkhead for 2 months. I have 50 plus runs on it 30 + runs 6s and at least 20 3 S parallel crawling and towing my daughter in a cart. I have broken an array of parts mostly metal. I'm astonished that the plastic bulkhead is still working condition. I installed the plastic bulkhead to see how well the HD Gear mod works in a plastic housing and I must say that I I'm a firm believer that the bulkhead is a durable drivetrain component for the XL.
This is just my own experience everyone's experience and driving styles are different.

Re: first rc and first build log

I think the helical cut gears prevent dysfunctional forces.. almost form as one as their interlock instead of a paddle method that the straight cut gears perform.. this could be a reason why I've had such great luck with the HD gears in the plastic bulkhead. I'm sure the straight cut gears cause more of an issue on the lobes for the bearings

Re: first rc and first build log

The kit arrived today and I just could not believe the size of the parts. I bought this by seeing videos on youtube only because my local hobby shop does not have any axial products on display. If it is not Traxxas related do not bother asking them anything.

The only bad thing was that the diff fluid bottle leaked half the bottle into the bag. It looks like there is enough for the front diff, which is good because I only planned using the 200k in the front. I picked up some 500k for the rear.

That grease will be fine. A good coat on ring and pinion will do you don't have to get crazy with it. Same for trans.

Over the weekend I was at a flea market and picked up a box of electronics for $15. I was hoping that someone could tell me if any of it would be good for this build....

Re: first rc and first build log

Well I finished researching and this is the conclusion that I came to....I can use the ESC's but not the motors or servo's

First ESC

Hobbywing WP-SC8, I think I can use with 2 2S Lipo's

2nd ESC

Turnigy TrackStar 120A Short Course ESC, I think I can use with 2 2S Lipos

First motor

EZRUN Sensorless Brushless 3656 Motor , can not use because 2S is highest and designed for 1/10th scale

2nd motor

FLUX VEKTOR 4000Kv BRUSHLESS MOTOR, can not use because 2S is highest and designed for 1/10th scale

1st servo
Servo: Circuit, Ruckus, Boost ECX1069, can not use because not enough torque

2nd Servo

TowerPro MG995 Servo, can not use because not enough torque

15 $ was a steal regardless .. I'm no pro, but I'd check if the E.S.C's can handle the weight to the XL.. Thomas from Castle Creations said the RTR Sidewinder was intended for a 7 lb vehicle ... And mines held up for whats that worth..
But for how nice your rig is I'd personally opt to sell your 1/10 scale stuff .. and use the profit to buy a used combo.."thumbsup"

I wouldn't bother using any of it, I'd use 1/8 gear that can handle the weight and size of the yxl, And it will go nicely with all your nice upgrades.

Save it for a 1/10 build mate.

Re: first rc and first build log

on my 1/8 race buggys i put a savox1268 @ 220oz torq.. they work fine because of the surfaces it runs on..
on the 1/6 yeti.. buy a servo thats full of torq The savox 1230 499 oz of torq! $59!
I ran the same servo on an ascender for a year and before that it was on 2 scx10s.. and it still being used.. those 1230 servos are hard core!

wings1024 06-29-2016 08:33 AM

Re: first rc and first build log

I agree to save them for something else.

I have not decided what to run for the ESC and motor, limited on cash.

For the servo I am going with this

Re: first rc and first build log

Has anyone tried this ESC and motor
