Hello! Best starter mods for XL!

Hello! I've just brought a second hand XL already kitted out ready for 6s, however, I'm now unsure what to upgrade first. I've had a quick scan over the forum but I'm still a little confused as to what to upgrade first. I've been looking into anti roll bars and upgraded shock tops but, I'd love to know what's best to start with and where's be to buy (preferably in the U.K.!)
Any help is very welcome and thanks in advance!
Thanks
Arron

Hi Arron. Welcome to the XL family. For me also being a newbie I have found the fourm a wealth of great information. Check out all of BHB mods "thumbsup"
For me I have replaced the following items
Gpm front alloy shock tower
Rpm front arms
Gpm rear drive shalf ( a must if running on 6s )
BHB basher bar
Replace the bearings in the transmission case with good quality ones. ( found out the hard way )
3 bearing mod for the front and rear diffs
Front sway bar from losi truggy
Front springs from redcat XBE
Gpm alloy steering crank
I got all these parts from asiatees "thumbsup"
Also I found the stock wheels were crap, There are plenty of options out there especially when running 6s. I ended up making some square drives to fit redcat XBE wheels which are a bit bigger in dia compared to truggy wheels and smaller than the XL standard wheels ( which is the setup I like)
I am sure there is plenty more up grades to add to the list and the guys on here wiil send you in the right direction.
Most of all go out and have fun with the XL
Cheers

Fantastic thank you very much for your help! I read a little about the "3 bearing mod" earlier but was t 100% sure exactly what it was, I may need to research a little more! Thanks again!

NOT going to start a war but I use the BHB mod and have been very happy on 6S. I have not tried the 3 bearing mod so I am neutral on that.

My first mods were the aluminum steering bell crank and a stronger steering servo ( protek 170T - 630oz-in @7.4V) to fix the sloppy steering feel. after that came the fast eddy bearings and a cup/ shield for the rear axle to keep debris out of the pinion input bearing. Good luck and have fun [emoji106]

I'd start with sway bars, although it's crazy fun with out them. But that wears off after a few packs.

Steering, you will notice pretty quick is rubbish, upgrade your steering and get yourself a decent servo.
Oh and the dust cover (tailshaft) mod is a must do.

The rest, do as you break stuff.
Enjoy it as is. Have fun

The 3 bearing mod is good, I've done it, but wait till you twist your shaft... it's not absolutely needed. Straight away.

Hey I wanted to mention to try a bronze washer to reduce the friction because the washer is "FIXED" correct? also shim between the bearing and the retainer washer... That will stop pinion movement. I noticed with this mod "if you push in on the with pinion wile turning it binds hard" with a LIVE driveshaft these forces will be occurring during normal operations.

note: only shim the 3rd bearing to the size of the spacer ...the remainder should be shimmed between the outer bearing face and the retaining clip.

"thumbsup"

The stock driveshaft is incredibly durable after the 2 1/2"screw shaft mod !!!

Rear track bar is a must for sure !!

BHB, do you have a link from this mod? I have looked and found some info but still not clear.

Re: Hello! Best starter mods for XL!

I also just got an XL. Totally love this rig. I did a few of the mods above. But I cant find the 2.5" bolt mod. Sounds interesting. I haven't broke much on mine. Trans case plastic is garbage. Saving for an aluminum one. After the bearing started to go it must have heated the hole in sits in. So that hole is egg shaped. If you haven't replace the bearings with quality one yet I'd get on that.
I did the bearing mode before I look on here for tips. It just made sense over a spacer.

How's yours holding up?
I also got mine used. The PO only upgraded the steering servo. (Nice Savox)I've bought the rpm arms and shock tower, fast eddy bearings and an aluminum front diff housing.
Going for the steering rack next,,,,it's getting even looser...lol.

Good luck with yours!
