Default Spunky's yeti XL

Hi all,

Yes I've been commenting hear and there but it's official my wife has said yes to an XL kit :-) I'll pick it up next week when I get my work bonus.

I'll be putting in my current Traxxas branded castle 2200kv motor, HobbyWing WP-SC8 (rated to 4s) and I'll be getting a semi cheap 25kg (700oz) servo and just replace it later if I need to.

I'm not really allowed to spend any more money on it as it's going to be about $750 AU already for the kit and servo (stupid Australia) so all I can do for now is the 3 bearing mod and a drive shaft cover.

I don't know if the BHB pinion mod applies to the stock kit gears or the spiral cut gears only.

I'll be purely running 3s for now as I have a bunch of them.

If there are any other free/cheap mods I can/need to do untill I sell one of my other RC cars for some mod money.

My first upgrade was going to be the aluminium bellcrank.. thoughts?

All I'm after is a reliable basher but my form of bashing is not insane, I want it to be able to survive a tumble or bad landing.

Getting excited (hope I don't regret my purchase)

So I've been talking to a local Yeti XL owner and he said I need to throw in the cost of the kit again in mods to make this thing reliable.

Its scaring me financially and I'm not sure I can do this build anymore.

I can barely afford the kit (I'm an adult.. just single income with mortgage, 2 kids and a wife) so buying the kit is no problems but if I need to bouble the cost in mods I can't do it.

Is all I need for 4s the rear pinion 3 bearing mod, bearing cover and don't launch it off mountains?

Or is it still going to implode for no reason.

What is mandatory is changing all the bearings, three pinion mod and maybe the steering bell crank (the original is too flimsy)

Yep that sounds about right.
I already brought a set of plaig bearings and an aluminium steering linkage arm and based on my years of RC experience this is the bit that needs to be replaced so that both wheels are linked together without plastic.

I get my kit tomorrow so just need to wait for the bearings to arrive before I start building.

Remember, three bearings mod has to be done both in front and rear!!!

I was thinking of them also but they are just for extra strength while the link is what keeps them from wobbling.

Maybe in my next round of "I hope my wife doesn't leave me" upgrades.

Got my kit... Just going through all the parts and my kit came with the bevel cut gears

Is this normal because it's not advertised to on the box or the website.

Now I'm happy and not happy at the same time because I do not have the means to cut the lip off (BHB mod) and I hear this MUST be done on these gears for propper mesh...

What can I do??

Just do the three bearing mod. You don't need to remove the lip, just need some extra shims

I am actually reading the 3 bearing mod thread now.

I don't understand how it will do anything other then have an extra bearing as a failsafe.

Even with proper shimming isn't the pinion at the same dispance due to the last bearing and 3 screws always at the same place?

The only way to move the pinion away from the spur would be to grind them down a little?
It's my brain figuring it out.. I'm an IT engineer not a metal one :-)

EDIT: I UNDERSTAND NOW!!! So by having LESS shims and the 3rd bearing the whole thing is slightly shorter. So that means the shaft/pinion "floats" in the diff housing. So when the 3 screws are tightened down there is a small gap between the screws and bearing allow the pinion/shaft to move freely and "settle" in the ideal spot for a good mesh. That is a great compromise becasue even if it floats towards the pinion when it spins it will still settle in the sweet spot.

Damn it Axial!!!!

I have started putting my kit together tonight (still waiting on bearings so skipping drivetrain steps for now) and they bloody sent me 2 RIGHT HUB CARRIERS!!!

For crying out loud! If the local hobby shop doesn't have stock then I'm not going to be able to use by the weekend.

I asked when I got the kit "if any parts missing etc do I contact you or axial" and they said they will sort me out so I hope they have stock.

Little update.. have gotten this far (munis the drivetrain.. waiting for bearings) and it's all going together well.

The LHS was able to provide me with the missing parts no questions asked so very happy with them :-)

I ended up going with a tornado RC 29KG servo.. it's so powerful when it's going center I can't turn it with my hand.

I think I might buy a new HobbyWing max8 esc (don't tell my wife.. shhh) that way after time if I want to run 6s I can.

Did a little more work on it today at my desk at work.
I have to say.. axial *sigh* all 4 of the rear links were different lengths.

The 2 uppers were about 5mm different and same with the lowers, I had to make the holes bigger to get the screws in.

Completed the "build".

I still have to do the entire drivetrain as my bearings did not arrive today but 100% tomorrow.

Overall it seems like a solid build (yes I know im late to the party and you all know the weak points etc.) and I'm really excited to take it for a drive.

Note: heaps anoyed that my 3s lipos do not fit but like 2mm.. what do other people do??
