Yeti suspension thread? Alright guys, I just finished building my Yeti kit and I can't believe how bad the suspension works. I've searched and everything seems to be buried on page 13 of a build thread. Lets start a new thread that just talks about suspension modifications. What your running and how it works. I built the kit per the specs. and the rear seems to pack out and kick, it needs more compression dampening and/or faster rebound. Not sure if it needs stiffer springs or thicker oil. It's blatantly obvious that the sway bar links cause the rear to bottom out leaving 1/2 to 3/4 inch of travel remaining. I just built shorter sway bar links out of extra parts tree stuff. Moved shocks to more vertical spots to increase spring/ rising rate. I'll report back with my results. Front: kit springs 30wt. oil Shocks in outer upper hole Rear: kit springs 30wt. oil shocks in rear upper hole shortened sway bar links Lets do this, sticky? |
Re: Yeti suspension thread? For best results with stock parts, run the shocks in the rear holes on both the upper and lower mounting doors. Run 30wt or greater oil. With stock springs add lots of preload. You don't really need the suspension to bottom out IMO. |
Re: Yeti suspension thread? I'm also interested to see what people steup they suspension.stock rtr tent to nose dive the rear seems to botom and them kick it. |
Re: Yeti suspension thread? Does the kit not come with various pistons? May need some playin with those, oil wt and springs along with preload settings to get it all right. When i was looking at the RTR 1/8 Yeti at the LHS... noticed right away how soft and sloppy this thing felt. |

Re: Yeti suspension thread? I added some spring compressors from slash and worked just right on the rear |
Re: Yeti suspension thread? I put Axial Medium (green) springs on the rear. For oil I went with 40wt rear/20wt front. I also rebuilt the shocks with the optional machined pistons. Added a bit of preload to both ends. Works perfect for me now. |

Re: Yeti suspension thread? I have the RTR and just swapped the lil for 32.5wt in the front and 30wt in the rear. Shocks are positioned: Ft, upper middle and lower outside (towards wheels); Re, upper rear mount, lower also towards rear most mount using SSD trailing arms. Preload set about half up front and almost cranked all the way down for the rear. I also swapped the link mounts on the tub to give a lil more triangulated geometry and flipped the axle mounts to level out axle pinion angle. Haven't ran it like this yet so we'll see how it goes Sent from my LGUS990 using Tapatalk |
Re: Yeti suspension thread? I used the rear shocks of the Exo (103mm - Yellow Springs) in front of the Yeti with some changes. Improved in fast corners. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/mU...c=w688-h544-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/9g...U=w888-h463-no |

Re: Yeti suspension thread? My Yeti kit Ikons seem to be working much better now since switching to the 3 hole pistons in the rear with 30wt and 45wt in the front. I had some old Berg shock springs that I'm using on both ends.. They're pretty close to the Axial yellows that I was previously using, just longer. Also added STRC aluminum caps. |
Re: Yeti suspension thread? If anyone is interested, I race my Yeti in U4 down here in Western Australia. below is what i have come to so far the best set up for U4 rock racing, I run the PitBull RB2's which gives a little more ground clearance and then sit the rig nice and flat. Front 60Wt Kit Pistons 4.33lb Firm Yellow Sprngs (No pre load) Axial Exo Sway bar kit (Hard) Rear 50Wt Variable Rate kit pistons (Installed for Slower rebound and faster compression) 3.01lb Super Firm Blue Springs (No Pre load) Vanquish Sway Bar The variable pistons installed in slow rebound stops about 99% of the donkey kicking while jumping. Check out page 54 of your manual for the shock tuning guide from Axial Hope it helps out a fellow Yeti owner |
