Default RTR Yeti: Servo and radio options for SSD 2 speed kit?

I have a RTR Yeti.
I'd like to run the SSD 2 speed kit and while I was at it I figure I'd take the opportunity to replace the stock RTR servo with something stronger.

With that in mind, does it make sense to move the RTR steering servo over to shifting duties and replace it with something else? Are people using the RTR servo as a shifting servo with the SSD Kit?

If so what are some servo options that would provide a solid upgrade?

Also, what about radio options? I don't want to get anything fancy. My understanding is that I will need a three channel radio, correct? What are some options?

Yeah the stock servo will work perfect for shifting. I recommend the Airtronics MT4. It has a cool thumb lever you can use for shifting.

Im just using a cheap flysky gt3b. I admit though shifting is awkward, the third channel is right on the grip but it does its job and I was able to bind with the rtr rx. I have not upgraded servos yet but will be watching if someone posts a not too expensive upgrade.

I believe the stock radio is a flysky unit, so any flysky radio should bind and work easily. I've been looking at the GT3B myself. As far as a servo goes, the Savox 1256TG is what I'd like to upgrade to.

So you guys are saying that I can use my RTR radio with the SSD Kit?
I thought it was only 2 channel.

Your transmitter is a 2 channel, but your receiver has 3 channels. If you were to purchase a 3 channel transmitter ( like the Flysky GT3B), you could bind it to your receiver and use all 3 channels.

I'd recommend a transmitter that allows you to digitally set the end points for servos, such as the Spektrum DX4C or DX3C. That way you can get your end points set perfectly for shifting and never have to worry about burning up your servo. That certainly isn't necessary, but it's nice. I'm using a non-digital set-up for one vehicle that shifts, and a digital for another vehicle that shifts. The digital radio makes the whole system easier to set up.

As far as a steering servo, I use the Hitec HS-5646WP. It's fairly cheap, strong enough (156oz), waterproof, has metal gears and doesn't require an external BEC. And, if you decide to run a BEC, you can ramp up the torque on this servo, as you can run it at either 6 or 7.4 volts.

For my shift servo I'm using the Traxxas 2056.

Take a look at the hacked GT3C. It has adjustable end points, mixing and can support up to 8 channels. It will work with the stock Axial receiver

The hacked gt3c is an absolute nightmare to operate...

The Airtronics MX-v, spectrum dx3c, dx4-, futaba 4--, etc. Will all work fine. Whatever you grt, make sure it has end point adjustments on the 3rd channel

Also if you're looking for a decent servo without the need for waterproofing you can buy this I run it in my HPI bullet. Its not the fastest but I just bash with my cars

fried that Savox servo the first outing . I will never use that junk again. Hitech is the way to go. Little more $ but last alot longer. I want play time not bench time..Thats just my personal experience and opinion, I dont mean to offend or hurt any 1s feelings...I just had a few too many bad experiences with Savox.
