Default Why is the rear axel off centered

Just curious what the advantage is to have the rear axle off centered. Isn't that harder on the drive train. Wouldn't a centered axel be better.

edit:

The only real advantage is not having to design a new axle.

It shouldn't be noticeably harder on the drivetrain.

Off center axles are used because they have a lot more clearance with rocks and stuff. The off center diff is not any harder on the drivetrain than a centered one

Regarding an axle there are two points that touch the ground. Those two points are the two tires. If the diff is located close to the tire (off center), it gives the highest ground clearance at the center of the axle.

So for crawlers it's better for axel to be off centered. New bomber has a centered rear axel, I'm guessing then it's meant more for trails and racing, not so much crawling

The Bomber is also offset.

The transfer case is more in line with the diffs on the bomber. That's why the drive shafts look straighter.

In 1:1s, if a rig has an offset pumpkin, the TCase output is offset as well so the drive shaft is straight. Bomber is a perfect example of this.
