SF south bay crawl spots

Took me a while to find all crawl spots on websites and blogs so I'm making this on-going thread with these rules for clarity.

name: most common name of the location amung us crawlers, nick name, short version so that they can be easily be blogged.

where: name of the park or closest cross streets. city. hill. house address. hobby shop. track, trail, etc.

How to find: discriptive location of the spots and how to get there.

class: crawler or scale or both or fun for any other r/c

history: if i'ts legal to r/c there (one reason it sucks to live in cali)

rating: 1-10 stars **********

google map location: get a google account, click on "my maps" make a location, drop the pin, save, click on the link button (upper right of map) right click, copy, and paste.

video: copy the web site address bar and paste for youtube

other: any other comments about this spot
you dont have to do all of these, just be more discriptive than the nor-cal web site.

crawlitreal 06-07-2010 03:11 AM

here's my first example:

NAME: Disneyland

WHERE: Linda Vista park, Cupertino, linda vista dr.

HOW TO FIND: when you get to the parking lot you are greeted with 2 play grounds to shut your kids and wife up so you can immediately begin to crawl. Not so fast, you can escape behind the upper play ground behind the bushes for an intamite hike with your crawler to steep challenging grades. Then for the grand finale, behind the open grass field to the right, is the magical place of a dried out rock water fall with a scale like trail on the side. It's got to be the best crawl spot in the south bay. I even found a name for the big rock at the end of the trail "Tombstone Rock" I hope nobody officially named it already (it's at the end of the scale trail)

CLASS: both

HISTORY: the place is always dead when I go there

RATING:**********

NAME: Dana Rock

WHERE: Dana Rock Park, San Jose, Ca. Houndshaven Way and Valleyhaven Way (Montery and Branham)

HOW TO FIND: park on the street, the hill behind the playground is where the action is at. looks like there is plenty party action at night. Alot of broken glass, weeds, and just recently, the back hill got caught on fire. Good large rocks and a little scale around them. Kid friendly if they are ok alone at playground. No restrooms.

CLASS: both

HISTORY: don't go there by yourself at night

RATING:******

Where in Santa Clara are you located?

crawlitreal 06-08-2010 01:46 AM

I live about a block away from downtown, the closest spot that I can get to real quick would be this park located behind Buchser middle school. That is an ant hill with giant ants crawling on the side of it. Gets boring real quick, not much to mention, so I'm not gonna add to thread.

NAME: Trimble Road

WHERE: near Trimble and De La Cruz Blvd, Santa Clara

HOW TO FIND: park in any driveway along side the canal, I did not see any no parking signs and it looks like they let you park there to walk on the public trail. The rocks are large and are all the same. Can get boring, but a good way to see what your crawler can do. Doesn't look like much to do further down the trail.

CLASS: comp crawler, large scale

HISTORY: looks dead, dark and scary under the overpass, no signs of bums.

RATING:****

NAME: Sheldons Hobbies

WHERE: 2130 Trade Zone Boulevard San Jose

HOW TO FIND: just to the right as you walk through the door you can break your crawler and fix it all in the same place. I think its still free time to crawl there.

NAME: Stevens Creek

WHERE: Stevens Creek Reservoir, Stevens Canyon Rd

HOW TO FIND: Pass the reservoir, make a right on to Stevens Canyon Rd. You will soon seen the creek on the right which has a few good areas. The best spot is a little up the road just past the first bridge along the creek. Down in the creek, you can go up as far as you can, the water level is high right now though.

CLASS: both

HISTORY: Correct me if I'm wrong or I if didn't cover all the spots. I'm guessing the creek was always dry enough to crawl. I think I read about someone getting kicked out, didn't see any rangers when I was there.

NAME: Hobo Rocks

WHERE: Colman Ave and 87. Guadalupe river park

HOW TO FIND: Park in the Target parking lot nearest to the trail. You will see a small patch of rocks along the river first, then head out under Colman. Not much there, rocks are big and lots of public on the trail. Further down, you will not find rocks, just alot of bushes.

CLASS: both

HISTORY: There is a rangers office on the other side of Colman, stay away from them, not recommended to go there when workers are present also. I didn't take my rig this time because I saw workers there in white trucks and rangers in green jeeps.

NAME: Almaden Park

WHERE: Camden and Meridian, Almaden Meadows Park.

HOW TO FIND: Parking on the street, big rock at the corner, you can't miss it. I took a trail ride behind the hill, no rocks, but it was cool.

CLASS: mostly comp

HISTORY: Don't know, but you have an audience of people in their cars at the intersection.

NAME: Almaden Reservoir

WHERE: Alamitos rd at Hicks rd, Almaden Reservoir

HOW TO FIND: Hicks rd takes too long so go down Almaden expy. all the way down and make a right on Almaden. Almaden turns into Alamitos. You will take a nice ride through an old town and then just after the reservoir, make a right on Hicks rd. Plenty of parking at the intersection. Step down into the creek, you can go up the creek with many waterfalls as far as you can go. I did not go any further due to the heavy brush at the end, maybe someone can bring a machete:mrgreen:. I went back home using Hicks and saw more of the creek with more rocks, but no where to park.

CLASS: Both

HISTORY: Looks like it was just made for a creek re-structure. Make sure no workers are there, looks like they are planting endangered trees.

NAME: Garden of Eden

WHERE: Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, Felton/Santa Cruz, Hwy 9

HOW TO FIND: Once you get to beautiful Felton, head south on Hwy 9, just past the RV parks on the left you will find Ox trail, you will see many cars parked on the side of the road. It's quite a hike down, so bring what you need. The trail goes a long way down to the railroad tracks, make a right and walk another long way along the tracks to the sign on the left that says Garden of Eden. It's a local Santa Cruz water hole, only large rocks there, but the "scenery" is good, you might catch a buzz too! Take the tracks further down till you see a hill on the left, you will see a small trail that goes up then down to the river, another hike but worth it.

CLASS: Both

HISTORY: Bunch of no dog or alcohol signs, but when I went there, I saw 3 dogs on the trail, 1 dog playing catch a the water hole, and beer/weed/chicks jumping into the water off the cliff.

If you guys ever make it down to the Almaden valley, here is a link to the place i have been going (Greystone). Its a little hike/rc drive from the street and plenty of rocks to keep you busy for hours. The entrance to the rocks is a cool little vein of exposed rock that is laid out like a little trail that weaves up and up. Takes about 15 minutes to get to the start of the rocky trail. Beautiful views of the valley. Watch for ticks/snakes. I have ran into both.

History of this place: Was an old quarry called the Goodrich quarry. They mined it from the late 1800's to about 1916ish.

Park on Boulder Mountain way. If you zoom out of the street view, you will see the trail and big rocks on the hill.

crawlitreal 07-13-2010 10:14 PM

looks like a cool place, I'll pm him before I post that location. Unless you or someone beats me to it.

FullScaleDreams 07-13-2010 11:41 PM

should have checked this before i replied to the santa cruz post. I now see you went to both spots. nice. "thumbsup"
