A lot of the control comes from learning the wire speed, distance from work, and arc amps setting for what you're working on. The labels on the box are good guide, but you'll find that often varying one or both slightly results in much better weld!

I try to wear helmet of course, long sleeves, and gloves even a little welding exposes you to a LOT of very bright light! I've gotten welding light burn several times...not good. I have a leather jacket with removal lower front portion that has come in very handy, the long sleeve shirts I use sometimes for a "quick" bead look like they've been left out in the sun 24/7 for couple years, they are significantly faded. Regular fabric does not provide nearly as much arc protectioin as even a cheap leather jacket.
Thanks for all the info nate! Looks like i got some studying to do. Along with trail and error'n ha.

Once you master core wire it will be time to get clean and use some argon and solid core wire. Much cleaner and no flux to get rid of.

I know I know. It was either a 110 welder without gas hook up or 240 welder with gas hookup. I bought the 240 first and realized my socket was a 220 plug so didn't feel like dealing with the pain. Here's something I just whipped up (didn't measure)

I was going to go that route, but as much as I weld not quite clean metal and sometimes it's windy so after finding the ESAB wire never bothered with the extra expense of shielding gas setup. Several buddies with that tend to run out of gas at the most inopportune times too, then we have to road trip assuming the welding supply store is open. However, the gas setup is nice for almost zero cleanup.

Not bad. S&K Steel and Blue Collar Supply are the two best places for metal in this area if you want big selection and good price, otherwise Ace Hardware or any of the home improvement stores.
