Fake Rock for Indoor Practice.
 

I was wandering around a local hardware store getting supplies for my job tomorrow. And found fake rock. Back by the lumber area. It is a outdoor rock climbing wall for a child's play set.

Cool through some dirt around the edges and it could make a cool backyard test course"thumbsup"

I've seen some cool stuff in Lowe's that's for small waterfalls and that type of thing. They were plastic but fairly pricey. I live in West Virginia, real rocks are much cheaper.

it was at lowe's didn't check the price. This one wasn't for a waterfall it was set up for play ground rock wall.

What was the surface like? Fairly grippy like real rock, or was it just smooth plastic?

I have seen those before. Mostly hard plastic and no grip. They will work as bumps and humps when laid flat, but if raised up on one end, offer very little grip to climb. You would need to find some kind of brush/spray type grip surface that will adhere to the plastic to add grip. For the money you would be better off making a rock course out of foam, wood, plaster,real rocks, etc.

Hardware stores sell plastic rocks to cover landscape plumbing valves that are made of a similar material to the toy rock walls. You would need to add grip to them as well, similar to above. They are also expensive and really aren't made with rock features suited for RC rock crawling. Again, making your own course at this point in time, would be the best way to go.
